New Delhi: Newcastle United have rejected a formal bid from Liverpool for striker Alexander Isak, reports The Athletic. He is keen to join the current Premier League champions this summer and has been training at his former club, Real Sociedad.
The Magpies are currently in South Korea as part of their pre-season tour of Asia. The Merseyside club had previously made an informal approach to Newcastle and expressed their interest in signing the striker in a deal worth £120million, and Arne Slot-side have now seen a formal bid rejected.
Newcastle have tried to make Isak stay with an improved contract, which would have included a release clause next summer. The club also encouraged him to stay through senior teammates, but the striker has not changed his stance and made it clear that he wants to leave.
He spent three years at Real Sociedad before joining Newcastle for £60 million in 2022 and has been training alone at the Spanish club. Both Newcastle and Liverpool were interested in signing Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike.
But the Merseyside club secured him on a six-year contract in a £69 million deal. Isak still has three years remaining on his Newcastle United contract, and their stance remains that the player is not for sale, although they have now begun their search for a potential replacement in case of his departure.
They are now interested in signing Benjamin Sesko, who is also a target for Manchester United. Isak netted 27 goals in all competitions for Newcastle United last season. He scored for the Magpies in the Carabao Cup final as they defeated Liverpool by 2-1 and ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has said that Isak is still their player and is contracted with the club. He further added that his wish is that he stays, but things are not in his full control.
"Of course, things are going on behind the scenes. Conversations will remain private. We’d love him to continue his journey at Newcastle. We’re in a strong position financially, and we’re determined to be successful," Howe previously said.
