New Delhi: GitHub is on a rapid path to a big goal of reaching one billion developers by 2030, and India is at the hub of this growth. Developers on the platform have increased to 19.2 million, and there are one million developers every quarter. India will overtake the United States, which already has 25.8 million users, as the largest developer community on GitHub by 2028 at this rate. The Microsoft-owned platform, which it acquired in 2018 at a price of $7.5 billion, identifies India as a key hub of its mission to create a global AI-based developer ecosystem.

Enterprises, startups and students are driving GitHub growth in India. Nahas Mohammed, the Director of Enterprise India at GitHub, argues that the developers of the country are the future of AI innovation, and the contributions to generative AI projects have increased by 95 per cent in the past few months. This wave highlights the increasing popularity of India as an AI development centre in the world.

AI Copilot boosts productivity

Indian firms such as Infosys, Wipro, and Cognisant have adopted GitHub Copilot to make the work process more productive, increasing it by more than 55, as they claim. These companies have also partnered with GitHub to help scale adoption and develop AI-driven innovation by opening centres of excellence. Enterprises are changing the way software engineering is practised and speeding up product development by incorporating AI agents into their workflows.

Lowering barriers, building AI-driven talent

GitHub is also removing obstacles to code through tools such as GitHub Spark, allowing anyone (even without in-depth technical knowledge) to build apps with natural language. This transition is breeding a new breed of citizen developers and increasing the talent pool of India. According to Mohammed, AI-powered tools are assisting professionals to learn quicker, gain confidence, and solve complex problems, positioning India as a global leader in the AI-powered digital economy.
