New Delhi: Sony is closing in on a major PlayStation milestone. As of June 30, 2025, the company has shipped 80.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally, according to its latest financial results. While that number is no small feat, the PS5 still lags behind the PS4, which had reached 82.4 million units shipped at the same point in its life cycle.

The April to June quarter saw 2.5 million PS5 units shipped, a modest increase from the 2.4 million shipped during the same period in 2024. Sales of games, particularly digital ones, also saw a healthy bump.

Digital sales dominate as PS5 game sales climb

Sony reported that a total of 65.9 million games were sold across PS5 and PS4 platforms during the quarter. That’s up by over 12 million compared to the same period last year. Of these, 6.9 million were first-party titles, up from 6 million a year earlier.

Digital game sales made up 83 percent of all full game sales, rising from 80 percent last year. This shift continues the ongoing trend of gamers moving away from physical discs in favour of downloadable content.

PlayStation Network crosses 123 million monthly users

The PlayStation Network is also seeing steady growth. Sony noted 123 million monthly active users as of June 30, 2025, up by 7 million from the same time last year. This increase suggests more players are engaging online with their consoles, whether through multiplayer games, digital purchases, or streaming services.

Still chasing PS4’s numbers

Despite strong growth, the PS5 has not yet caught up to the PS4. As of June 30, 2018, the PS4 had shipped 82.4 million units. The PS5, launched in late 2020, is still 2.1 million units behind, although the gap could close in the upcoming quarters, depending on holiday season performance and new game releases.

Sony’s hardware strategy and exclusive titles are expected to continue pushing sales, especially with upcoming releases and the better availability of PS5 Pro.

PS5's software library still growing strong

On the software front, Sony’s first-party games continue to perform well. Helldivers 2, released in February 2024 for PS5 and PC, has already crossed 12 million global unit sales. Spider-Man 2 has also done solid numbers, with 10 million copies sold as of early February 2024.
