7.0 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan, no loss of life or property reported so far

Teipei: A powerful earthquake of 7.0 hit Taiwan on Saturday evening, triggering panic among the people in the region. There is no immediate reports of loss of life or property. The earthquake reportedly hit in the northeastern city of Yilan at around 23.05 pm (local time).

What was the epicentre of the earthquake?

Sharing details, the officials said that the epicentre of the earthquake was 2.3 kilometres east of Yilan County Hall. As per Taiwan's National Fire Agency, while the damage assessment is going on, no Tsunami alert has been issued so far.

Sharing a message on X, the agency, while asking people to be careful, wrote, "An earthquake occurs while you are sleeping, here's the safest way: At 23:05 today (27th), a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred 32.3 kilometers east of Yilan County Government (in the eastern waters of Taiwan).”

"The first thing to do is protect yourself and stay away from dangerous items. Put your shoes and flashlights by your bed. Wait until the shaking stops before taking any action. Stay calm and avoid injury from aftershocks. Being prepared together is the best way to protect yourself and your family in critical moments,” it added.

Previous major earthquakes

The latest earthquake struck three days after Taiwan's southeastern coastal county of Taitung was rocked by tremors measuring 6.1 on Wednesday. The quake had shaken buildings in Taiwan's capital, Taipei. The depth of the quake was said to be around 11.9 km, AFP reported.

Tremors were felt in various parts of Taiwan, including Kaohsiung. Several items reportedly fell of the shelves at a supermarket in the southeastern county. In April last year, Taiwan experienced a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4. It was the major earthquake in 25 years. In which 17 people lost their lives.
