Dhaka: Amid tense ties between India and Bangladesh, Chinese envoy to Dhaka Yao Wen visited the Teesta project area on Monday. The project is quite close to the Siliguri corridor, also known as the Chicken Neck. It is a 22 m narrow strip between North east states and India’s mainland.
According to the interim government in Bangladesh, the visit of the envoy was related to a technical assessment carried out for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project, ‘The Times of India’ reported. Last year amid protests in Dhaka and other Bangladesh cities, protesters had targeted New Delhi with anti-India protests.
Officials who accompanied Yao on the project site said that China was looking to start the implementation of Teesta Master Plan (TMP) and added that both Dhaka and Beijing are committed to the project. They said that this was not possible at this time, as the scrutiny project was still in progress. The Teesta river as a very important water resource for Bangladesh and India.
Because of this, the water strategy has not yet been completed between India and Bangladesh and this was not possible at this time, as the scrutiny project was still in progressed Dhaka for decades, due to concerns raised by the West Bengal Government. Sharing a message on X on Monday, Bangladesh officials wrote on the envoy's visit, “Both sides exchanged views on issues of mutual interest, reaffirming longstanding friendship and development cooperation between Bangladesh and China.”
It added, “Discussions included Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project and the proposed Bangladesh–China Friendship Hospital. In this context, the Chinese ambassador informed that he would visit Teesta project area, and reiterated China’s commitment to completing the ongoing technical assessment expeditiously.” During an interview in China last year, Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus had urged Beijing to establish a strong economic structure in his country.
