Greece Village Faces Fifth Year of Flooding as Enipeas River Overflows

Anochori village in central Greece endures its fifth consecutive year of severe flooding as the Enipeas River overflows following heavy rains from Storm Byron. Residents express profound frustration over neglected river infrastructure and authorities repeated failure to address the annual devastation that submerges homes and streets.

Anochori village near Farsala, central Greece, has once again been submerged by floodwaters, marking a recurring nightmare for its residents. Heavy rainfall from Storm Byron caused the Enipeas River to overflow, inundating homes, streets, and vehicles, and triggering a 112 emergency alert. This incident follows similar devastation caused by Storm Daniel in 2023, highlighting the areas long-term vulnerability to flooding.

Locals have expressed profound frustration over the persistent issue. Chrysostomos Papakonstantinou, a resident, articulated the communitys sentiment, noting that houses at the village edge are particularly affected, as water from the overflowing river consistently enters their properties.

He lamented that the river is never adequately maintained, leading it to overflow with minimal additional rainfall. This recurring problem has persisted for five consecutive years, with villagers stating that every rainy season brings floods due to a perceived lack of action from the municipality and prefecture regarding infrastructure improvements.

The situation has been described by some as having "become ridiculous and a joke." Authorities have yet to implement effective long-term measures to prevent the repeated flooding, leaving Anochori villagers at significant risk annually.
