New Delhi: An Indian-origin who used to work as a nurse in a hospital has been found guilty of murdering an Australian woman. The perpetrator in question is Rajwinder Singh, and the victim had been identified as Toyah Cordingley. The verdict was delivered by a jury in the Cairns Supreme Court.

How did the murder take place?

On October 22, 2018, the body of Toyah Cordingley was discovered half-buried in Wangetti Beach's isolated section, among the sand dunes. The place is about 40km north of Cairns, a vibrant city in tropical Far North Queensland, Australia. Rajwinder Singh reportedly went to the beach after a fight with his wife. He had some fruits and a kitchen knife when he arrived at the beach.

At the same time, Cordingley, a pharmacy worker, was walking her dog at the beach, and the two got into an argument after her dog barked at Singh. It infuriated Singh, who stabbed her, buried the body there and tied her dog to a tree. Two days after the murder, he fled Australia on the pretext of his grandfather's illness. His wife and three children were left behind as he remained on the run for four years without even contacting his family.

Police suspected him soon after the murder, matching the car movements of Singh with the mobile phone location of Cordingley. The Queensland Police announced a reward of 1 million Australian dollars for information on him, and Singh was finally arrested in November 2022 by the Special Cell of Delhi Police before he was brought back to Australia. Cordingley's father, after the verdict was pronounced, yelled at Singh, "Rot in hell, you bas****", expressing his anger at the perpetrator.
