‘Osman Hadi killing a political vendetta’ : Bangladesh Police files case against 17 accused

Earlier on Monday, Home Affairs Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury while speaking to reporters, had said that the final chargesheet in the Hadi murder case would be submitted on January 7. The police, however, filed the chargesheet a day earlier due to protests in Dhaka, which have been demanding justice for the killing.

Dhaka: Days after student leader Sharif Osman Hadi killed in Bangladesh, the country’s Police filed formal chargesheet against 17 accused in the case. It said that Hadi was killed due to political vendetta in Bangladesh.

“Through public rallies and social media, Hadi had strongly criticised the past activities of the now-banned Awami League and Chhatra League. Hadi's outspoken remarks angered leaders and activists of Chhatra League and its affiliated groups," Md Shafiqul Islam, Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Detective Branch, said while speaking to news portal tbsnews.net.

He added, “Considering the political identities of the accused and the victim's previous political statements, the investigation has revealed that Hadi was shot dead due to political vengeance. Islam added that Faisal Karim Masud, the alleged shooter, was directly involved with the Chhatra League. Another accused, Taizul Islam Chowdhury Bappi, who allegedly helped Masud and Alamgir Sheikh in the killing, fled after the killing. He was the president of Pallabi Thana Chhatra League.

Hadi had played a crucial role in the uprising against the Sheikh Hasina Government, leading to her ouster. Recently, he was attacked in Dhaka. After an initial treatment in the capital, Hadi was shifted to Singapore for further treatment. However, after treating him for a few days, the doctors declared him dead.

Protests began in Bangladesh soon after the death, including shouting of anti-India slogans. Several Hindus were also killed in Bangladesh, including Deepu Das. The attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh have also increased diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka.
