The recent India-Russia Summit in New Delhi, attended by President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscored the enduring strategic partnership between the two nations. Discussions primarily focused on bolstering defence cooperation, expanding trade, and strengthening energy ties. A significant point of interest was Indias potential acquisition of Russia’s fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jets and advanced S-400 and S-500 air defence systems.

Technology transfer emerged as a pivotal aspect of these defence dialogues. India, aiming for self-reliance (Atmanirbharta) in defence production, prioritises partners willing to share crucial technologies.

Russia has historically been a reliable technology transfer partner, exemplified by projects like the BrahMos missile and assistance in nuclear submarine technology. While the United States remains guarded about tech transfers, Russia has shown openness to provide components of Su-57 technology, albeit excluding stealth capabilities.

Experts highlighted India’s need for advanced air defence systems with anti-hypersonic and anti-stealth capabilities, capabilities that the S-500 system offers. Despite potential delivery challenges stemming from Russias ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the summit reiterated Indias reliance on Russia for critical military platforms and strategic technology collaboration.
