New Delhi: Lotus Cars have said that the 2027 facelift of the Emira sports car will have a plug-in hybrid powertrain to adhere to Euro 7 emission norms. The updated Lotus Emira will utilise the carmaker's “Hyper Hybrid” technology, which is set to debut on an SUV later this year.
Emira Turbo trims are powered with a 2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine, sourced from AMG. It is available in two tuning options, one producing 365 bhp and 430 Nm of torque, and the other 406 bhp and 480 Nm of torque. The Emira V6 trims come with a 3.5-litre, V6 supercharged motor, sourced from Toyota. In India, Lotus are offering both the powertrain for the sports car.
For now, the Mercedes engine is likely to be scrapped in the 2027 EU7, with hybrid versions taking over. Lotus had earlier intended to phase out the Toyota engine, which can’t be upgraded according to the forthcoming norms. However, the V6 has been extremely popular in the US, one of the largest sports car markets in the world, which has prompted the brand to consider a larger engine.
One of the options they could be looking at would be the Mercedes-AMG 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, used by the Aston Martin Vantage. This would make the new Emira to become the first V8 powertrain since it dropped the Esprit V8 from their portfolio in 2004.
Lotus Group CEO Feng Qingfeng earlier had said that their original goal of becoming a complete electric outfit by 2027 had been scrapped to favour hybrids. In fact, the upcoming Lotus cars are going to have ultra-fast plug-in charging capability, with a turbocharged ICE to have an overall range of 1,094 km, Qingfeng said.
This comes with the slower-than-anticipated growth of electric cars. In fact, Lotus had reported a nearly Rs 2,760 crore loss in the first half of 2025.
