New Delhi: BMW has rolled out the latest update to its X5 SUV in India, adding new variants and equipment while keeping both petrol and diesel options on offer. Locally produced at the brand’s Chennai facility, the updated X5 comes with more technology inside, design tweaks, and fresh kit that makes it sharper in both city and off-road conditions.
The launch also brings revised pricing, with the X5 now starting at over ₹1 crore, positioning it firmly among the premium luxury SUVs in India. The X5 continues to be one of BMW’s strongest sellers globally, and the new update is aimed at keeping it relevant in a segment where competition from Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, and Volvo XC90 has only intensified.
BMW has introduced four variants of the updated X5, split between petrol and diesel engines:
All prices are ex-showroom, and additional charges for registration, insurance, and taxes are extra.
The petrol-powered xDrive40i uses a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo engine producing 381 hp and 520 Nm. It can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.4 seconds. On the diesel side, the xDrive30d is powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit making 286 hp and 650 Nm, achieving 0–100 kmph in 6.1 seconds. Both engines are paired with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox and come with a mild-hybrid system using a 48V motor that adds an extra 12 hp and 200 Nm when needed.
For enthusiasts, the mild-hybrid setup means better efficiency in stop-go traffic, while still offering strong performance for highway runs.
The SUV comes with Adaptive 2-Axle Air Suspension as standard, aimed at balancing comfort with dynamics. BMW has also made the xOffroad package standard, giving the driver a choice of four off-road driving modes: sand, rocks, gravel, and snow. Each setting adjusts the car’s suspension, traction, and stability systems to suit the surface.
Inside, the X5 gets a curved widescreen display setup that merges a 12.3-inch driver display with a 14.9-inch infotainment unit. Features like four-zone climate control, Harman Kardon audio, panoramic sunroof, comfort seats, and a suite of connected tech through BMW’s iDrive are standard across the range.
For those looking at design, the M Sport Pro pack adds blacked-out exterior trim, red brake calipers, M-specific exhaust, and piano black interior finishes. Paint options include shades like Brooklyn Grey, Tanzanite Blue, Mineral White, and Carbon Black.
BMW has equipped the SUV with multiple airbags, dynamic stability control, electronic parking brake, ISOFIX mounts, and driver assistance features such as cruise control, parking assistant with surround view, reversing assistant, and attentiveness alerts.
With prices starting at ₹1 crore, the updated X5 competes directly with the Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q7. BMW’s decision to add the off-road package as standard signals its intention to make the X5 a more versatile SUV, appealing not just to luxury buyers but also to those who want a car that can tackle rough terrain.
The X5’s combination of strong engines, mild-hybrid tech, and luxury features makes it one of the more rounded options in the large luxury SUV space. Whether it is worth the premium will depend on how Indian buyers weigh brand pull against rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
