EV sales spike in October, Mahindra, Hyundai lead, Tesla chokes

The EV segment has overall seen a massive growth, especially since October last year, but while it has been smooth sailing for the likes of Mahindra and Hyundai, it has been a decline curve for Tesla.

New Delhi: The Indian EV passenger segment recorded a strong year-on-year growth in October 2025m according to the newest data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Overall, the PV retail sales reached 18,055 units, going up from 11,464 units in October 2024. 

The segment’s market share, though, stood at 3.2 per cent in October 2025, a decline from 5.1 per cent in September 2025, but it is still higher than October 2024’s 2.3 per cent.

It was Mahindra and Mahindra who enjoyed the best of the month, coming as a fast-growing major brand. With a 309.53 per cent YoY growth, the sales rose from 955 units in October 2024 to 3,911 units in October 2025. Hyundai Motor India have also delivered an impressive YoY growth number of 1133.33 per cent, growing from 36 units last year to 444 units this year. 

Kia have also seen a good month with the brand having the highest percentage growth among established brands, with a 1295.74 per cent increase thanks to the new Carens Clavis EV. Even JSW MG Motor India continued with good performance, coming with a 62.28 per cent YoY growth with 4,549 units sold this October, going from 2,786 units last year.

Tata Motors, the market leader, maintained their dominance with 7239 units sold, showing a good growth of 9.53 per cent. BMW had an amazing growth with a 96.20 per cent YoY growth, having sold 310 units from 158 last year. Their German rival Mercedes-Benz AG saw a sharp decline with 44.44 per cent. Even Stellantis saw a fall of 79.77 per cent.

Marking their first full month as sellers in India, VinFast debuted with 131 units in the month. The Vietnamese brand are currently selling two units, the VF7 and VF6, with both starting prices at below Rs 20 lakh. 

Having created a lot of buzz this year, it was Tesla whose sales were glaring as it sold only 40 cars in October, taking their overall sales to 104 units. In September, they had sold 64 units of the Model Y, the only vehicle sold in India presently. Tesla’s retail sales fell to 37.5 per cent m-o-m. They presently have two showroom outlets in Indiaand the entrance in the market is still in its early stages.

From September, the month-on-month growth of the electric PV saw a 17.78 per cent growth with VinFast leading the surge by 2083.33 per cent, followed by Stellantis which had 44.44 per cent, and Hyundai Motor India saw 27.22 per cent growth.
