New Delhi: Following the success of Chetak EV, Bajaj Auto is close to diversifying their electric two-wheeler portfolio with an entry in the motorcycle segment. They will likely come with one of their most popular bodystyyle, Pulsar. The Pune-based brand is currently working on electrifying motorcycles, which are expected to make their way to the showrooms in the coming years.
A senior in the brand has hinted that, in place of focusing just on the subsegment defined by power and mileage, Bajaj wants to have several product options.
Earlier this month, whilst interacting with analysts, Rakesh Sharma, executive director of Bajaj Auto, Rakesh Sharma mentioned that they want to have options both at “entry-level and high-end sporting segments”. In the entry-level of the electric motorcycle segment, products are priced at Rs 1.5 lakh and have a ride range of around 150 km on a full charge, and the main competition comes from the likes of Revolt, Ola Electric, Oben and Komaki.
In the high-end motorcycles with speed and performance as the main focus, the bikes cost above Rs 2 lakh, and the main competition is from the likes of Ultraviolette, Joy and Raptee.
Bajaj Auto entered the segment in January 2020 and, since then, has just multiplied their position in the electric two-wheeler segment through the electric Chetak scooter with multiple launches. The brand is at present the second largest electric two-wheeler maker in India, behind TVS Motor Company.
Sharma noted that the brand had a big R&D effort going on for the development of an electric motorcycle.
More and more brands are entering the electric motorcycle segment in India, with brands like Royal Enfield recently showing the all-electric Flying Flea F6. This bike comes with Scrambler-like styling for city use and light off-roading. It will be launched next year. Even TVS Motor and Hero MotoCorp have shown electric motorcycles at the EICMA show in Milan very recently. Both brands are intending to bring these products to the market pretty soon.
While scooters are popular, motorcycle is a preferred bodystyle for most consumers given their ability to handle different road conditions better. Data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers as of year-end March 2025 noted that almost 63 per cent of the Indian domestic two-wheeler segment was controlled by petrol motorcycles, making it the big segment for the makers.
