New Delhi: Honda is preparing for a bold return to India’s automotive spotlight. The Japanese carmaker has announced a major product push, promising to launch at least 10 new vehicles by 2030, including seven all-new SUVs. The move signals Honda’s biggest bet yet on India’s fast-growing SUV market, which has been dominated by brands like Hyundai, Kia, and Maruti Suzuki.

The company’s global CEO Toshihiro Mibe confirmed this strategy at the Japan Mobility Show, calling it an “aggressive model launch plan.” For context, Honda’s current India line-up includes only three models, the City, Amaze, and Elevate, a sparse range compared to its rivals. With this new push, Honda wants to fix that and re-establish itself as a serious player in India’s SUV race.

According to a report by Autocar India, Honda’s plan includes a mix of global and India-specific SUVs, all slated for launch by 2030. These new models will target different price brackets and segments, from compact crossovers to premium SUVs. A dedicated India project team has been set up to drive this product strategy, ensuring the upcoming models cater to local market preferences.

The company also revealed details about one of its most anticipated future SUVs — the Honda 0 Series α (Alpha), scheduled for a 2027 debut. This model will reportedly share several components with the current Elevate, including parts of its platform, while introducing a brand-new architecture designed around Honda’s next-gen software ecosystem.

India to become a global hub for Honda’s 0 Series SUV

The most interesting part of Honda’s strategy is that the 0 Series α SUV will be made in India and exported to Japan and other Asian markets. This marks a major shift in Honda’s global manufacturing footprint, with India now playing a more central role in design and production.

The 0 Series α SUV, first shown at the Japan Motor Show, is part of Honda’s broader effort to modernize its line-up and compete with both legacy rivals and new Chinese automakers making inroads globally. The SUV will carry Honda’s latest design language and technology, blending global engineering with Indian manufacturing efficiency.

Company officials told Autocar India that they plan to “make maximum use of Elevate components and combine them with the Zero Series concept to create a new product.” This will help control costs while speeding up development timelines, something crucial for India’s price-sensitive market.

What this means for Honda India

This aggressive strategy marks Honda’s first major expansion plan in nearly a decade. The company had faced declining market share as sedan sales slumped and its SUV portfolio lagged behind competitors. The new launches could change that, positioning Honda as a strong contender in India’s most profitable car category.

With SUVs now accounting for more than 55% of India’s passenger vehicle sales, Honda’s timing could not be better. The 0 Series α SUV, in particular, could become a global flagship model if production and exports go as planned.
