One of the most important steps in India to operate a vehicle is to register their car. The Registration Certificate (RC) is a crucial document that validates that the vehicle is registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and is necessary for commercial, two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles. It is an important document in Uttar Pradesh, as it is across the country.

The documentation attests that the car is registered according to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 and is road legal. The certificate contains important details about the vehicle, including chassis number, engine number, vehicle type, registration number, owner’s details, model and manufacturer, etc.

It showcases that the car is in legal compliance, and owners are following the rules regarding the vehicle. It helps in preventing fines for operating a vehicle after the RC has expired. Further, when buying a second-hand car, the RC status is important to make sure that the car isn’t caught in any legal issues. Even for an insurance claim, a valid RC is required, or else the application will be rejected.

The RC status following submission of the application can be checked either online or offline. For the online form, visit the Parivahan Sewa’s official portal.

  • At the Parivahan Sewa website, find “online services” and select “Vehicle-Related Services”.
  • Select Uttar Pradesh from the dropdown menu.
  • Enter the vehicle registration number along with the captcha.
  • Submit details such as the registration date, validity and more to view RC status.

For the offline method, the individual needs to find the RTO closest to them

  • Visit the Regional Transport Office (RTO) closest to where your car is registered. Make sure you begin the procedure no later than sixty days before to the expiration of your RC.
  • Gather and fill out Form 25 with information about your car, which is available at the RTO or online at Parivahan Sewa.
  • In addition to other identifying documents, you will need to present your current RC, a valid insurance certificate, pencil prints of the chassis and engine, and proof of road tax payment.
  • At the RTO, your car will undergo a physical examination to verify its roadworthiness.
  • Depending on the type of vehicle you own, pay the renewal price in accordance with Rule 81 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.
  • Your renewed RC can be picked up from the RTO or mailed to your registered address following processing and verification.

For RC, the documents required are Form 20, which is an application for vehicle registration. Plus, there has to be a sales certificate, address proof, age proof, insurance certificate, PUC certificate, Pan Card, invoice of the vehicle, Form 21 and Form 22.
