New Delhi: Hyundai India have announced that it has plans for at least eight hybrid models for the country by the end of the decade. While Hyundai have confirmed plans to bring hybrid cars to India in April 2024 and the company has now revealed the number of hybrid models that are set to come to the Indian shores.
During their 2025 Investor Day, Hyundai revealed plans to launch eight hybrid models in India before 2030. These are part of their strategy of 26 models that are coming to the Indian market and will comprise 16 per cent of the carmaker’s line-up by the time they all go on sale. Further, the hybrids will contribute to Hyundai’s aim of having about 52 per cent “eco-friendly” product mix by the end of the decade.
A big reason for Hyundai going hybrid is due to the recently-revised proposal draft for CAFE 3 (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency), which is set to go into effect from April 1st, 2027. The draft proposes a credit system where every EV, hybrid and flex fuel vehicle sold is granted a multiplier of up to 3. Plug-in hybrids and flex-fuel strong hybrids are counted at 2.5 for every unit sold, while strong are counted twice for every unit sold.
In order to offset emission penalties from ICE-powered models with greater emissions, this encourages automakers to market hybrid vehicles. On the other hand, Hyundai is working on a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, which is rumoured to be compatible as a strong hybrid and might well become the bedrock for the carmaker’s hybrid powertrains in the country. The engine is expected to make its debut in the Bayon crossover next year, which could also be the carmaker’s first hybrid model in the country.
The engine might also make it into the updated i20 and Venue, making them a part of Hyundai’s hybrid portfolio, which will include models from both sides of the pricing spectrum. The next-gen Creta will likely come with a hybrid powertrain when launched in 2027. Hyundai also has plans to slot one hybrid SUV above the Alacazar and below the Tucson.
This will likely be arriving in 2027 as well and could be powered by Hyundai’s existing 1.5-litre petrol engine working with an electric motor. Even the Palisade hybrid SUV is scheduled to be launched in 2027 as Hyundai India’s flagship model. Coming as a full-sized SUV, it will come with a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol hybrid setup that debuted this year as Hyundai’s next-gen in hybrid powertrain.
