New Delhi: Kia have introduced their first-ever CNG in India, with the Carens. It is available only in the Premium (O) trim, the CNG kit that can be added as a dealer-level fitting for an additional cost of Rs 77,900 over the petrol Carens, which is priced at Rs 10.99 lakh.

The CNG kit, which is supplied by Lovato, is fitted to the Carens with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine, which makes 115 bhp on petrol; however, it is expected to have lower power out when running on CNG. The Kia Caren’s CNG jit gets a 3-year/1,00,000 km third-party warranty. Kia haven’t given the exact power or mileage of the Carens CNG as it isn’t factory-fitted and not yet homologated.

While Kia have gone for a third-party supplier for their CNG kits, their sister brand Hyundai uses twin-cylinder engines for their CNG-powered cars. Crens also gets a 1.5-litre diesel engine that makes 116 bhp.

Kia Caren Premium (O) features

In their only trim, Premium (O), Carens gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry, electric ORVMs, semi-leatherette upholstery, roof-mounted 2nd- and 3rd-row AC vents, one-touch electric tumble for the 2nd-row seats, a shark-fin antenna, and a rear-view camera. Kia haven't said how much the boot space will become due to the CNG-kit with the standard version of the Carens being rated at 216-litres.

For safety, Kia Carens comes with six airbags, ABS and EBD, all-wheel disc brakes, traction control, vehicle stability management, brake assist, downhill brake control, TPMS, rear parking sensors, and ISOFIX child-seat anchor points. At the GNCAP crash safety, Carens scored three stars as well.

Kia is selling the previous version of the Carens along with Carens Clavis for customers wanting an accessible seven-seater. The affordable version of the Cqrens is for fleet operators, and the addition of an economical CNG makes it suitable for running as well.

The Carens Clavis is for premium MPV buyers and comes with quite a few trims and has three engines, and four transmission options. Like Kia, many brands have given dealer-level CNG fitment, including the likes of Honda’s City, Amaze and Elevate, as well as Renault’s Kwid, Triber and Kiger, Nissan Magnite and Citroen’s C3 and Aircross.
