Subaru teases a new STI model; could it be for production?

Subaru have yet again teased the revival of the WRX-STI, ahead of its unveiling on January 9th, 2026, probably at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The brand is expected to give all the technical details then.

New Delhi: It has been a repeated cycle of Subaru teasing a WRX STI, and this time, Subaru have shown a little clip of this on their Japanese social media platforms. It hints at the return of the legendary performance badge before the debut in 2026. Whilst this has been seen before, there are reasons to be hopeful about it.

In the short clip, there are insights as to what could be coming, with the opening being a tight shot of the STI logo. This is followed by the blue, WRX-shaped sedan or a hatchback speeding through snowy forest back roads. You can even hear the Subaru boxer engine, though the brand is silent about the technical details of the block.

The teaser ends with a “Coming Soon” and a date of January 9th, 2026. That lines up with the Tokyo Auto Salon, Japan’s biggest performance-car event in the world and a place where the Subaru will feel at home to reintroduce their most iconic nameplates.

The speculation is that this is probably just another STI Performance Pack and essentially the same warmed-over visual treatment seen on quite a few models. Subaru also teased even Performance-B and Performance-E concepts recently, which gives a glimpse into how the brand’s performance packs might look in the future.

There’s a chance that this isn’t actually a production model of either of these two. Subaru have hinted that forthcoming STI-badged models might include some type of electrification, though the one being teased doesn’t sound very electric or a hybrid.

It has fuelled a lot of speculation among car enthusiasts. If Subaru does decide to go for a production STI, it remains far from being confirmed at this stage. However, January could signal the long-awaited comeback of one of their most iconic names in the world of rally-inspired performance cars.
