Big size advantage across height, wheelbase and boot capacity

On paper, the Sierra carries a clear size advantage. At 1,715 mm, it is the tallest midsize SUV on sale. Its 2,730 mm wheelbase is also the longest, which should improve rear cabin space. Tata claims a 622 litre boot, making it one of the largest luggage areas in this segment. Ground clearance stands at 205 mm, and the option of 19 inch wheels gives it a strong SUV stance.

Entry level petrol: moderate power, more gearbox flexibility

The entry level 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine produces 106 hp and 145 Nm. It comes with a 6 speed manual or a 7 speed dual clutch automatic. This places the Sierra close to the Maruti Victoris in output, although the Honda Elevate and Hyundai Creta continue to offer higher power figures. The presence of a dual clutch automatic is expected to appeal to urban buyers looking for smoother daily usability.

Turbo petrol: one of the stronger performers in the class

The 1.5 litre turbo petrol delivers 160 hp and 255 Nm, matching the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in performance. It is paired with a 6 speed torque converter automatic. In this category, the Sierra holds its ground against the segment’s strongest offerings, including the Volkswagen Taigun and Skoda Kushaq, which use 150 hp 1.5 TSI engines.

Diesel engine: limited competition, stronger torque figures

The diesel segment has become smaller over the years, but the Sierra continues with a 1.5 litre diesel producing 118 hp and up to 280 Nm in automatic form. With only the Creta and Seltos still offering diesel options, the Sierra gains an edge with its higher torque output, making it attractive for long distance highway users.

Overall positioning in the midsize SUV market

Based on specifications, the Tata Sierra enters the market with strong numbers. Its size, multiple powertrain combinations and competitive outputs help it position itself among the leading contenders. Real world performance, ride comfort and long term durability will determine how strongly the Sierra challenges the current leaders once customer deliveries begin in January.
