New Delhi: Elon Musk-owned American electric carmaker, Tesla, have announced that they will be expanding their presence in India, having opened two physical touchpoints last year in Mumbai and Delhi. The brand on X announced that they will open yet another touchpoint in Bengaluru.
The touchpoint in Bengaluru is expected to have four Supercharger stations, quite like Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai and Aerocity in New Delhi.
At present, Tesla have only one car in their portfolio, the Model Y, which we saw last year during the Aerocity inauguration. At present, Tesla comes win two battery options: the 60 kWh battery pack and a 75 kWh battery pack. Further, the Model Y sold in India is only available with a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) trim against the all-wheel-drive trim sold globally. While the 60 kWh battery has a claimed range of 500 km, the long-range RWD has a claimed range of 622 km.
The brand is expected to offer autonomous driving in India for a premium of Rs 6 lakh; however, the capability of use will be rolled out at a later date, as there is no clarity about the law regarding this. The Tesla Model Y has a starting ex-showroom price of Rs 59 lakh and is priced as high as Rs 67.89 lakh.
Media sources say the Superchargers established by the brand in Delhi NCR and Mumbai are Version 4 units, which can charge other EVs. They will be exclusive to Tesla cars for now and will allow other electric vehicles to be charged at a later time.
There is a charging infrastructure opened by Tesla in Gurugram at the DLF Horizon Centre. It has a mix of charging options, including four Version 4 Supercharger units with a peak output of 250 kW and three Destination Chargers that deliver 11 kW.
All of this is fine, but the brand hasn’t made much of a dent in the market. There are many reasons for this, with the minimalistic design, high price, and not coming with the best products all contributing to the lack of enthusiasm for owning the car.
