New Delhi: Elon Musk has confirmed during the Tesla Q2 sales numbers that Tesla’s upcoming entry-level model will not be a new car but rather an “affordable” version of the Model Y. Earlier this year, the American-based brand had expressed confidence that the new launches looked promising, of which one would be the “affordable model”.

It was assumed that the cheaper Tesla would be an all-new vehicle, touted as to be called Model 3 on its debut. However, now it is most likely to be a stripped-out version of the EV maker’s best-selling vehicle from their portfolio. The production of this series of Tesla Model Y’s affordable variant will start in August or September.

The ongoing electric car grants in the United States amount to $7,500 per unit, are soon going to end following President Trump’s rollback on emission mandates.

Earlier this month, Tesla unveiled their showroom in India and launched the Model Y at Rs 60 lakh for the RWD, while the long-range RWD comes at Rs 68 lakh. The brand has now even opened bookings for pan-India, which earlier was limited to certain cities, which will still get priority. In the segment that it targets, there are vehicles at cheaper options.
