New Toyota Land Cruiser FJ breaks cover: Smaller than Fortuner, bigger than Jimny
Toyota has officially revealed the new Land Cruiser FJ, a compact off-road SUV that sits below the LC 250 series. With a rugged body, 4x4 drivetrain and functional interior, it aims to bring Land Cruiser capability to a wider audience.
New Delhi: Toyota has officially lifted the cover on its much-awaited pint-sized Land Cruiser FJ, a compact SUV designed to sit below the LC 250 Series. What makes this model stand out is its old-school off-road charm packed into a more approachable size, making it the smallest and most affordable Land Cruiser yet. This isn’t a luxury cruiser made for city shopping malls. It looks ready to get muddy, scrape rocks, and still drive back home with its tailgate-mounted spare wheel on full display.
Toyota says the new FJ brings "Freedom & Joy” while keeping the brand’s reliability intact, and based on its rugged proportions, that promise doesn’t sound too far-fetched. The company will unveil the SUV to the public at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 on October 30.
Toyota's mini Land Cruiser dimensions and off-road stance
The Land Cruiser FJ measures 4,575 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width and 1,960 mm in height. The wheelbase stands at 2,580 mm, making it shorter than the Land Cruiser 250 by 270 mm. This reduction typically improves off-road manoeuvrability.
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ dimension comparison (mm) with Jimny, Thar, Fortuner, and Creta
| Model | Length | Width | Height | Wheelbase |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Cruiser FJ | 4575 | 1855 | 1960 | 2580 |
| Mahindra Thar (3-door) | 3985 | 1820 | 1844–1855 | 2450 |
| Maruti Jimny (5-door) | 3985 | 1645 | 1720 | 2590 |
| Hyundai Creta | 4330 | 1790 | 1635 | 2610 |
| Toyota Fortuner | 4795 | 1855 | 1835 | 2745 |
This puts the Land Cruiser FJ right between the Fortuner and Jimny in terms of size. It is clearly more imposing than compact SUVs like the Creta, and significantly taller than both Thar and Jimny, giving it a strong upright stance. However, its wheelbase is shorter than Suzuki Jimny (JC74), but larger than Mahindra Thar 3-door.
Exterior: Retro meets modern SUV
- Boxy body with rectangular grille
- LED headlamps with angular C-shaped DRLs
- Optional round headlamps via customisation pack
- Tailgate-mounted spare wheel
- Vertical tail lamps
- Heavy-duty segmented bumpers for easy replacement
This combination of rugged styling cues with modern lighting signatures signals Toyota’s attempt to revive its classic Land Cruiser heritage for a new generation of buyers.
Cabin and features
The interiors are functional, not flashy. A large infotainment screen and digital instrument cluster dominate the dashboard. Physical buttons are retained for quick access during off-road use. The setup closely resembles the Land Cruiser 250, suggesting shared platform components to keep costs in check.
Key interior highlights:
- Digital driver display
- Centre console-mounted off-road control switches
- Full-size grab handles
- Physical buttons for climate and terrain modes
Engine and performance
The Land Cruiser FJ will be powered by a 2.7-litre 2TR-FE four-cylinder petrol engine producing 161 bhp and 246 Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 6-speed Super ECT automatic gearbox paired with a part-time 4WD system.
While detailed performance figures are yet to be announced, this engine has been used in previous Toyota off-road models known for long-term durability.
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ launch timeline and markets
- Global Unveil: October 30, 2025 (Japan Mobility Show)
- Japan Launch: Mid-2026
- International Rollout: Post Japan launch, expected in key Asian and Middle Eastern markets
Toyota has not yet announced prices, but being the smallest Land Cruiser in the lineup, it is expected to be positioned well below the Fortuner’s price band.
