New Delhi: Volkswagen Touareg has been on sale for 23 years, and the German brand have decided that it is time for the combustion-engine Touareg to end production in 2027. The brand had already announced the intention, and now they have given a special edition for the Touareg’s ending days. It is called the “FINAL EDITION”.

There is however, not much that separates the Touareg FINAL EDITION from the standard one, apart from the lettering that is laser-engraved on the window surrounds of the back door.

On the inside, this theme continues, as it comes embossed into the leather gear selector and the name is lit up on the sills as well as on the passenger side of the illuminated dash. There is nothing more in it than one might expect.

However, there is hope that the Touareg might someday actually return, as the brand said the current Touareg’s ICE models are going away and since there are no fully electric Touaregs, there might be a replacement already on the way, hinting that the name will continue to exist as an EV. With the upcoming ID. Polo, VW have said that all future EVs will come with the “ID” as a prefix in the traditional names, and enthusiasts have hope that it might just come as an ID. Touareg.

Along with Phaeton, Touareg was the brand’s most ambitious calling back in the day, without competing with Audi, even though it came with both a diesel V10 and a W12 petrol. Phaeton, though, had only one generation; the Touareg stayed on for three generations and even came to India, though it was heavily priced without many buyers and was discontinued in 2014.

Even though VW is pulling the plug, quite a few of its platform buddies are still continuing. Porsche have said the Cayenne is staying until the 2030s and Audi is preparing for a new Q7. Even Bentley have said that they will not discontinue Bentayga, one of their best-selling cars. Lamborghini will stay with the Urus as well, with the second-gen now coming with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in 2029.
