New Delhi: Triumph have launched the Thruxton 400 in Indian at Rs 2.74 lakh (ex-showroom India). It is mostly based on the Speed 400 and takes a lot of design cues to align with its cafe racer format. It comes with a different and sharper fuel tank that is exclusive to the Thruxton 400, with an inset for the Triumph logo.

Another point of distinction will be the rectangular taillight, which is much different compared to the 3D, layered tail light of the Triumph’s 400cc lineup. The Thruxton moniker for a while has been associated with the cafe racers in Triumph’s lineup, and the Thruxton 400 isn’t out of this either.

It stands apart from the Speed 400 in the aesthetic and ergonomic changes. It comes with clip-on bars, bar-end mirrors, a remote brake reservoir, a black USD fork as opposed to the golf one from the Speed 400 and refreshed side panels filled with Thruxton badging with added brushed aluminium accents.

It also comes with a single seat configuration as standard, complete with a rear cowl which is removable and unlocks a pillion seat complemented with ba lack grab rail.

The new model comes with the same 398cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that is on the other 400cc Triumph range that produces 42 bhp and 37.5Nm, gaining 2 bhp and has a torque of 37.5 Nm. The chassis, suspension and braking all come from the Speed 400. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch.

It also has differences in both geometry and weight from the Speed 400. The suspension at 140 mm is 10 mm more, and the wheelbase is a little shorter at 1376 mm, with the ground clearance being at 158 mm, with the seat accessibility increased a little at 795 mm. Further, it now tips the scale at 183 kg.

Triumph have said that the Thruxton 400 will either come with MRF tyres or Apollo tyres, depending on the supply chain availability. The company has said that the bike has been benchmarked with both tyre options, with amazing performance in both cases.

It takes some things from the Speed, which include a digital-analogue instrument cluster with a vertical rev counter and gear position indicator. Safety equipment also includes dual-channel ABS and traction control. It will get four colour options, including red, yellow, black and white, all coming with a diagonal stripe of contrasting colour.

At Rs 2.74 lakh price, the Thruxton is a premium of Rs 24,000 over the Speed 400 and sits below Scrambler in Triumph’s 400 cc line-up. Thruxton 400, coming as a unique cafe racer, doesn’t quite have a rival and the closest it gets to competition in terms of look is from Royal Enfield Continental GT, but is priced much higher.
