How Indian Railways is nearing full electrification of Broad Gauge Network; surpasses UK, Russia, China

Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha mentioned that Indian Railways is nearing full electrification at 99.2% of Broad Gauge Network, Far Ahead of UK (39%), Russia (52%) & China (82%).

New Delhi: In the last one decade, Indian Railways has been working at fast pace to improve its infrastructure, including Electrification of railway network, installing wifi at stations, modernised rain coaches, etc. So far, about 99.2% of Broad Gauge (BG) network has been electrified and the work is going on in remaining network. The Railways has installed free Wi-Fi services at 6117 Railway Stations across the country so far. Notably, No separate funds have been sanctioned by Ministry of Railways on these Wi-Fi services at Railway stations.

Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, submitted a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha informing about the electrification of railway network.

The minister said Railways’ achievement in railway electrification stand out globally. According to the latest report of International Union of Railways (UIC) of June, 2025, railway electrification in important railway systems is as under:

In 2023-24, Railway Electrification achieved 7,188 Route kilometer, while in 2024-25 it stood at 2,701 RKM. Further, all new line / multi-tracking projects are being sanctioned and constructed with electrification.

The written reply submitted in the Lower House mentioned that the existing Broad Gauge network in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram states of North eastern region have been 100% electrified.

CCTVs at Railway stations

The minister eplied that the Railway is installing CCTV cameras at several stations and train coaches. "So far, CCTV Surveillance system has been provided at 1731 stations and 11,953 coaches for ensuring safe and secure journey to railway passengers," it stated.

"CCTVs were already installed at New Delhi Railway station to cover outdoor areas like entry/exit points, foot over bridges, platforms etc. and indoor areas like waiting halls, ticket counters etc. However, some new areas were developed at New Delhi station premises after February 15, 2025 and accordingly additional CCTVs are provided to cover these areas. Presently, 250 Nos of CCTVs are provided at New Delhi Railway station," Ashwini Vaishnaw said in his written reply
