Mumbai: The BSE Sensex declined 166.26 points to settle at 80,543.99 on Wednesday. The 50-share NSE Nifty went down 75.35 points to end at 24,574.20.
The benchmark indices dropped as selling was recorded in IT and healthcare shares amid the RBI MPC’s decision to keep the key interest rates unchanged at 5.5 per cent.
Gainers from the 30-share Sensex pack, Bajaj Finserv, Tata Steel, HCL Technologies, Infosys, Bajaj Finance, Eternal, Tata Consultancy Services, UltraTech Cement, ITC, L&T, Sun Pharmaceuticals, and Tech Mahindra.
Gainers included BEL, Adani Ports, State Bank of India, Trent, HDFC Bank, Asian Paints, and Mahindra & Mahindra.
"Despite renewed trade tensions—stemming from the U.S.—the domestic market remained resilient, holding firm near the key support level of 24,500. The pharma sector underperformed, emerging as a notable casualty of the tariff warnings," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments, said.
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra announced the decisions taken by the Monetary Policy Committee today. The central bank kept its repo rate unchanged as policymakers weighed the risks posed by US President Donald Trump's trade policies. The central banking authority retained the GDP growth projection for the current fiscal year at 6.5 per cent.
It is noteworthy, that despite the volatility in the market, Domestic Institutional Investors purchased equities worth Rs 3,840.39 crore on Tuesday, while Foreign Institutional Investors sold equities worth Rs 22.48 crore.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng, Japan's Nikkei 225, and Shanghai's SSE Composite settled in Green, while South Korea's Kospi ended on a flat note.
Shanghai's SSE Composite and Japan's Nikkei 225 were trading in the positive territory while South Korea's Kospi and Hong Kong's Hang Seng quoted lower. The US markets settle lower in overnight deals on Tuesday.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude marginally appreciated 0.64 per cent to USD 68.07 a barrel.
On August 5, 2205, the Sensex dropped by 308.47 points to finish at 80,710.25. The broader NSE Nifty went down 73.20 points to end at 24,649.55.
