A family of 3, a 52-year-old woman and her 2 adult sons, allegedly died by suicide at their rented accommodation in Kalkaji. Initial investigations suggests that they were under financial stress and were also depressed. This may have been the trigger for the suicides, said police officials. However investigations have been launched in the matter and police are trying to piece together the sequence leading up to their deaths.
New Delhi: In a sad development reported from Delhi's Kalkaji area, a 52-year-old woman and her 2 sons were found dead at their home on Friday. The police suspect that this was a case of suicide, as they recovered a note from the home, which indicated that the family was in financial stress. The three used to live at a rented accommodation in the area, said the police officials.
Family had not paid rent for months: Police
According to a report in the Hindustan Times, on Friday at around 2:45 pm in the afternoon, a bailiff and the local police reached the Kalkaji home with a court order, regarding possession of the house. It was then that the bodies of the 3 were discovered.
According to the police the family had failed to pay their monthly rent for several months. They had rented the house for Rs 25,000 monthly, but could not pay the money, added officials. After repeated requests for rent payment went unheard, the owner had decided to approach the court and got an eviction order.
When repeated knocks on the door when unanswered, the police decided to enter the house using a duplicate key. Once inside, they found the 3 occupants of the house hanging from a ceiling fan in one of the rooms.
The woman's sons were aged 32 and 27 respectively. The police also recovered a suicide note of one and a half pages from the 2 storey house. It suggested that the family had been battling depression for a long period.
Financial stress may be reason for suicide: Police
Though the officials refused to reveal what could have been the exact reason for the suicides, they said that financial stress, coupled with depression could have triggered the family to take the extreme step. According to the note, the trio were unemployed and were also not able to work due to depression. The police said that the youngest son was preparing for UPSC examinations.
The police have moved the bodies to AIIMS and have launched an inquiry in the matter. They are trying to understand what would have been the immediate trigger for the family to have taken the decision to kill themselves.
According to the neighbours of the family, the woman's husband had passed away a few years back. Since then the 3 of them had been living on their own, without any source of income. The police said that the family had also stopped interacting with neighbours in recent months.
According to the officer, the family had rented the house in 2023 and at the time the woman's husband was still alive. However even then they had defaulted on rent payments. The man was a property dealer, who had taken loans from his acquaintances. He failed to repay most of the loans and died in 2024, leaving the family in debt.
According to preliminary in investigations, the 2 brothers had attempted to die by suicide, even 2 months back. The police are now examining the suicide note, digital evidences and also contacting extended family of the deceased to piece together the exact sequence of events which might have driven the family to kill themselves.
