QS Sustainability Rankings 2026: Where 103 Indian universities stand globally

IIT Delhi stands tall as the best institute from India in QS World University Rankings 2026 for Sustainability. Among the 15 IITs that feature in the QS ranking 2026, six improve their rankings compared to last year.

New Delhi: The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has released the much-awaited World University Rankings 2026 for Sustainability. This study abroad consulting firm released the world's top universities, which are leading the way in social and environmental sustainability. Lund University from Sweden has been ranked as the world's most sustainable university. It is followed by the University of Toronto and UCL, London, in the second and third positions, respectively. 

Nearly 2000 institutions have been ranked in QS World University Rankings 2026: Sustainability. While coming to the contribution of Indian universities showcasing sustainability commitments, a total of 103 universities featured. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi retains the top spot as India's best-ranked institute, followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur.

QS World University Sustainability Ranking methodology

The QS Sustainability rankings will be prepared based on university performance across three categories. 

  • Environmental Impact (45 per cent): Aggregating three indicators: environmental sustainability, environmental education and environmental research)
  • Social Impact (45 per cent): Aggregating five indicators: equality, knowledge exchange, impact of education, employability & outcomes and health & wellbeing)
  • Governance (10 per cent): Related to good governance (ethics, transparency, decision making, etc.).
