New Delhi: As the Congress suffered crushing defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections on Friday, the party leadership on Saturday got into a huddle with senior leaders of the party, to introspect what went wrong. Congress -- one of the key constituents of the Mahagathbandhan - managed to bag only six out of the 61 seats its contested in the Bihar polls.
Congress chief Mallkiakrjun Kharge chaired the meeting at his residence. Senior party leaders including Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal and Ajay Maken were present at the meeting. This is first such meeting after the Bihar Assembly election results.
During the meeting that lasted for nearly one and half hours, the party leadership discussed the poll outcome and analysed the reason behind the party's dismal performance.
Such kind of strike rate is unbelievable
Venugopal said that such kind of 90 per cent strike rate is unbelievable. The Congress leaders also said that they will put the details before the people and EC need to answer that.
The NDA swept the Bihar polls, winning 202 of the 243 Assembly seats in the state. While the BJP won 89 seats, Nitish Kumar's RJD bagged 85 seats. Chirag Pawan's LJP(RP) won 19 seats. The Opposition bloc won 35 seats -- RJD (25) and Congress (6).
Kharge and Rahul spoke to RJD leaders Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi Yadav and other alliance partners over phone during the meeting to discuss election outcome.
What RaGa said on Bihar poll results
Rahul Gandhi on Friday termed the Bihar Assembly results as "truly surprising" and said "we could not achieve victory in an election that was not fair from the very beginning". He further said that the Congress and the INDIA bloc will conduct an in-depth review of the poll results and make more effective efforts to save democracy.
"I express my heartfelt gratitude to those millions of voters in Bihar who expressed their trust in the Mahagathbandhan. This result in Bihar is truly surprising. We could not achieve victory in an election that was not fair from the very beginning," Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X.
