New Delhi: South Korean filmmaker Shin Sung-Hoon has passed away. Though the 40-year-old died earlier this year in May, the news of his passing was only confirmed recently. The news shocked the South Korean film fraternity.

According to reports, his funeral was conducted as a no-relative burial as the authorities could not identify any of his immediate family members. The authorities stated that he had no chronic illnesses, and no suicide note was discovered. His body was found at his residence after a friend informed authorities of his absence.

The filmmaker was born in an orphanage. Later, he was adopted. However, his adoptive mother was a gambling addict, furthering his misery. The director had to pay off a debt of  160 million Korean won. Soon after, he legally ended the adoption. On many occasions, the filmmaker spoke of his past.

He has also shed light on the instability faced by filmmakers. During times of no film work, Shin supported himself by working as a part-time labour.

"If you don't keep making commercial films, it's hard to continue as a director. Many short-film and independent directors have it worse than I do; they just don't say it out loud. Until you make your commercial debut, every day is like a war. If we can't keep producing films, we can't make a living," said Shin.

He also reflected on how hard his part-time labour job was. "After a day of that, I realised how hard it is. My whole body hurt like it was breaking down. Coming home, I wondered, 'Maybe I shouldn't keep walking the director's path,'" he stated.

The filmmaker started his journey in the movie business as a singer in 2002. He then took on small acting gigs. Later, he went in the path of directing.
