Economic Survey 2026 proposes making India an ‘education tourism’; calls for yoga, ayurveda courses to attract foreign students

New Delhi: The Economic Survey 2025–26 has outlined a wider roadmap to position India as a global destination for 'education tourism', combining higher education with cultural learning and travel. The survey proposes attracting international students through short-term academic programmes aligned with India’s traditional knowledge programmes such as yoga, Ayurveda, philosophy and heritage studies.

Tabled in Parliament today, the survey stressed that India has unique untapped potential to attract foreign students specifically from the Global South. The survey also cautions that internationalisation must be taken forward carefully to avoid rising cost of education, excessive commercialisation and the dilution of indigenous knowledge systems.

Low share of international students

The survey notes that the number of inbound international students in India increased from under 7,000 between the year 2000 to 2001 to around 49,000 in 2020 just before the country was hit by the Covid pandemic. Despite this growth, the count of international students is only about 0.10 per cent of total higher education enrolment in the country.

'..It is far below leading host countries where international students form 10- to 40 per cent of enrolments. In 2024, for every one international student coming to India, 28 Indian students went abroad with significant associated foreign exchange costs. Annual outward remittance under the ‘studies abroad’ component has increased to USD 3.4 billion in FY24,' the survey added.

For study abroad, Indian students mainly prioritise countries such as Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia.

Education tourism through new programmes

To increase the demand for higher studies in India, the survey recommends diversifying academic offerings apart from traditional degree programmes.

'Programme diversification beyond full degrees, such as summer schools, semester-abroad modules, heritage and philosophy tracks, yoga and Ayurveda certificates and innovation or rural-immersion labs can be bundled with tourism circuits and tailored for BRICS and wider Global South partners.'

The survey also suggests that top Indian higher education institutions should institutionalise two-way exchange programmes and offer joint, dual or twinning degrees with foreign universities.

Policy reforms and global outreach

On the policy front, the survey calls for reforms such as faster visa processing, post-study internship opportunities, recognition of prior learning and flexible credit systems. It also recommends strengthening housing, healthcare, counselling, insurance and visa support for international students.

It further proposes 'leveraging alumni and start-up ecosystems through embassies and incubators' and building regional networks in STEAM3 disciplines. Given tighter visa and enrolment norms in developed countries, the survey sees this as a timely opportunity for India to improve its global branding and outreach.

Caution against commercialisation

While encouraging internationalisation, the survey warns against unchecked market forces. 'Caution must be heeded to the working of market forces that might lead to a general increase in the cost of education, excessive commercialisation or exclusion of marginalised, as also to the risk of overemphasis on borrowed knowledge systems that may undermine indigenous or local traditions.' It also flags possible governance challenges arising from limitations in the existing regulatory framework.

Industry-academia gaps and faculty shortages

The survey highlights weak industry-academia linkages, citing a TeamLease Edtech report. 'A recent TeamLease Edtech report showed that 75 per cent of HEIs lack industry-readiness.'

It also points to low placement outcomes, limited use of internships and live industry projects and faculty shortages with over half of professor posts vacant in central universities as of January 31, 2025. On the University Grants Commission’s Professor of Practice initiative, the survey notes-

NEET PG 2025 Counselling: Supreme Court directs NMC to include 49 PG seats at HIMSR

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to include 49 postgraduate medical seats of the Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR) in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate (NEET PG) 2025 counselling so that the seats are not lost for the upcoming academic year.

With the order being passed on January 27 by a Bench comprising Justice B V Nagarathna and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, the top court allowed counselling for these seats for the 2025–26 academic session and instructed that the seats must also be included in all rounds of NEET PG counselling beginning from the very first round scheduled on January 29.

The court noted that postgraduate counselling for students who appeared in the NEET PG exam is set to commence shortly and that no delay should prevent eligible candidates from participating. The Bench observed that students seeking admission to postgraduate courses at HIMSR must be allowed to take part in counselling strictly based on their NEET merit ranking without any uncertainty over seat availability.

Dispute over affiliation approval

The matter reached the Supreme Court after confusion arose due to the non-issuance of the consent of affiliation by Jamia Hamdard the parent university. This led to doubts over whether the 49 postgraduate seats of HIMSR could be included in the official counselling process.

Because of this pending issue the seats were at risk of being excluded from the NEET PG seat matrix which could have resulted in all 49 seats remaining vacant for the entire academic year.

Seats directed to be included in seat matrix

With the urgency of the counselling schedule, the SC stated that immediate intervention was necessary. The court recorded submissions made on behalf of the NMC stating that it would comply with any direction passed by the court, subject to the final outcome of the case.

After hearing senior counsel representing all parties including the university and the medical regulator the court directed the NMC to include the 49 seats in the official seat matrix of HIMSR so that they can be allotted to eligible candidates during counselling.

The Bench also highlighted that allowing these seats to go unfilled would be unfair to NEET-qualified students waiting for admission. It said the directions were issued in the larger interest of students and to ensure that postgraduate medical seats do not go in vain for the academic year.

UGC Equity Regulations 2026 face supreme court challenge over definition of caste-based discrimination

New Delhi: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the recently notified UGC (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations 2026 claiming that the rules unfairly exclude individuals from non-reserved categories from protection against caste-based discrimination.

The plea has been filed by advocate and social activist Vineet Jindal. In the petition, the advocate argues that the new regulations are 'non-inclusionary' in nature. According to the petition, UGC Regulation 3(c) defines caste-based discrimination in a very narrow way which is limited to only the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) categories. This has led individuals from the general or non-reserved categories to be left out of the grievance redressal framework, even one faces harassment or discrimination based on caste within educational institutions.

Alleged violation of fundamental rights

The plea claims that the regulation creates an unconstitutional 'hierarchy of protection' by selectively recognising discrimination faced by only certain caste groups. It argues that this violates key fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution.

As per the petition, the regulation violates Article 14 (Right to Equality), Article 15(1) (Prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth) and Article 21 (Right to life and personal liberty which includes the right to live with dignity).

The petitioner has urged the Supreme Court to impede the University Grants Commission from enforcing Regulation 3(c) in its present form. The plea also seeks a direction to redefine caste-based discrimination in a 'caste-neutral and constitutionally-compliant manner.'

'Caste-based discrimination should be defined so that protection is accorded to all persons discriminated on the basis of caste, irrespective of their specific caste identity,' the petition states.

The plea further seeks interim directions to the Union government and the UGC to ensure that mechanisms such as Equal Opportunity Centres, Equity Helplines and Ombudspersons are made accessible to all students without discrimination till the issue is reconsidered.

Speaking to PTI, Jindal said, 'We have certain objections with the new rules brought by the UGC. Sections 12 and 23 of the UGC Act state that the UGC’s role is to grant funds to universities and to regulate technical education. Nowhere does it say that the UGC can make laws or frame rules concerning students or stakeholders. The second major issue is that the regulations framed under Section 3C show caste-based bias.'

New Delhi: India and the European Union have finalised a free trade agreement and signed a new mobility pact. The pact aims to make it easier for Indian students, workers and professionals to move, study and work across EU countries.

The signing of the agreement was done at the 16th India-EU Summit held on January 27, 2026, in New Delhi. Beyond trade and economics, education, skills and people-to-people movement are now being treated as one of the major pillars of India-EU relations.

EU commits to uncapped mobility for Indian students

One of the most significant highlights from the agreement is the EU’s commitment to 'uncapped mobility for Indian students.' This means there will be no fixed numerical limit on Indian students moving to EU countries for education and related opportunities.

As per officials, the mobility framework is designed to allow Indian learners easier access to study, research and work opportunities across EU member states, along with aligning with individual country policies.

Highlighting the broader vision behind the move, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated, 'Artificial intelligence is one of the best examples. So today, I'm glad to announce that we are working on India's association with Horizon Europe. Horizon is the world's largest public research programme and I can't wait for our best talents to get to work, to advance health, clean energy, frontier technologies. This will help researchers and start-ups, next generation technology.'

'Signing a mobility agreement, we will facilitate the movement of students, researchers. It will be a one stop hub to support Indian talent, moving to Europe in full alignment with your Member States' needs and policies,' Von der Leyen further added.

New mobility framework and legal support system

The agreement includes the conclusion of the India-EU Comprehensive Framework of Cooperation on Mobility. According to the joint statement,' They welcomed the conclusion of the India-EU Comprehensive Framework of Cooperation on Mobility, in line with the national competences of EU Member States and India and domestic legislation of both Parties.'

A key operational step is the launch of a pilot European Legal Gateway Office. 'They commended the launch of the first pilot European Legal Gateway Office, as a one-stop hub to provide information and support the movement of workers, starting with the ICT sector.'

This office is expected to help Indian professionals to better understand legal pathways and employment opportunities in Europe.

Focus on safe, legal and skilled migration routes

The statement also stresses the importance of orderly and legal migration. 'They reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing collaboration on safe, regular and orderly migration including through circular pathways for highly skilled workers, students, researchers and seasonal workers in shortage occupations, whilst also strengthening cooperation on countering irregular migration, in accordance with national competences and the law of both Parties.'

Safe migration routes

For Indian students graduating from EU institutions, the mobility pact also creates a clear education-to-employment pathway. Indian young professionals completing their studies in Europe will now have a guaranteed window of at least 9 to 12 months to seek employment.

By integrating Indian talent into the European workforce at an early stage the framework is expected to strengthen long-term economic links. Experts noted that this early workforce exposure will support a rise in knowledge-based services exports back to India.

Education and skills dialogue to launch in 2026

To support long-term cooperation, India and the EU plan to launch a formal Education and Skills Dialogue in 2026.'Aspiring to deepen educational and academic collaboration, the two sides agreed to launch Education and Skills Dialogue in 2026 to promote skills development, facilitate recognition of qualifications and learning periods abroad, and support systemic collaboration in higher and vocational education.'

Education leaders, policy experts, and institutional heads believe the upcoming budget presents an opportunity to strengthen the foundations of learning, research and skill development in line with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. From primary education to higher learning and employability, experts are looking forward to targeted investments.

Across schools, universities and other institutions, there is a growing consensus that research funding, faculty development, digital infrastructure, and industry collaboration must form the core of budgetary allocations this year. THE World University Rankings by Subject 2026: IISc emerges as only Indian university in top 100; Asia leads global shift

New Delhi: The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026 have been released and as per the list, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has once again emerged as the country’s best-performing institute. IISC Bengaluru is the only university to feature in the global top 100 of any subject category.

As per the latest rankings, Asia continues to strengthen its position in higher education, however, the representation of India at the very top remains limited.

Asian universities continue to outperform their counterparts in Europe and North America specifically in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects. IISc remains India’s highest-ranked institute in computer science, thereby securing the 96th position globally. The institute has also earned a score of 99.7 which reflects its close collaboration with the corporate sector.

Other institutes such as Amity University, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Symbiosis International University and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology were listed in the broader top 500 band.

As per THE World Rankings by Subject 2026, 'Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) topped in arts and humanities, business and economics and social sciences in a repeat of last year.' In the United States, Stanford University ranked first in education and law, Harvard University led in engineering and life sciences and the California Institute of Technology topped physical sciences.

'The University of Oxford led the way in computer science and medical and health, while the University of Cambridge overtook Stanford in psychology. Only Harvard, Stanford and Cambridge appear in all 11 subject rankings’ top 10s,' the official statement read.

Indian universities continue to have thinner representation in arts, humanities and law. The University of Delhi was placed in the 401 to 500 rank, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the 501 to 600 range. Other institutions such as Jadavpur University, JMI, OP Jindal Global University, Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Christ University were ranked lower.

OP Jindal Global University made its mark in the rankings therby emerging as India’s top law institution and placing in the top 300 globally. In engineering, IISc led India again but was ranked in the 101 to 125 band. Moreover, private universities like Lovely Professional University and Graphic Era University also featured.

UK International Education Strategy: India among key partner as Britain targets 40 billion pounds

New Delhi: India has emerged as a key partner in the United Kingdom’s newly released International Education Strategy, as Britain plans its education exports to 40 billion pounds annually by the year 2030. The strategy highlights how the UK plans to expand the global reach of its education sector and strengthen partnerships across top international markets.

Released recently on Tuesday, the strategy marks a shift in approach moving away from targets on overseas student numbers and instead focusing on education exports, international campuses and long-term global partnerships. India plays a major role in this revised vision.

The UK government has created a new Education Sector Action Group to work alongside the International Education Champion, universities, colleges and schools. The group will work to remove trade barriers and expand education and skills offerings in high-growth markets.

The International Education Strategy said, 'The International Education Champion, Professor Sir Steve Smith, will continue to remove barriers to education partnerships by engaging with his current focus countries of India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam.'

Along with India, the UK has added Brazil, Mexico and Pakistan to its list of emerging economies where it aims to expand the global presence of British education.

UK shifts focus to education exports, overseas campuses

Under the revised vision, the UK has eliminated targets on the number of international students studying within the country. Instead, the focus is on growing education exports abroad including through the establishment of international campuses.

'By expanding overseas, our universities, colleges and education providers can diversify income, strengthen global partnerships and give millions more access to a world-class UK education on their doorstep, all whilst boosting growth at home,' UK Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said.

As per the strategy, the University of Southampton as the first foreign university to establish a campus in India under the new University Grants Commission regulations. Its Gurugram campus is highlighted as a centre for research, innovation and teaching and is called a 'significant achievement.' The document also points to nine new British university campuses announced by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Keir Starmer in October 2025.

'Education exports are a major UK success story, and we're on track to grow the sector to 40 billion pounds by 2030, powered by world-leading providers driving digital learning, AI-enabled innovation and future skills development,' UK Minister for Trade Chris Bryant said.

Visa rules, compliance standards to stay strict

While promoting global expansion, the UK government said universities will face tougher compliance standards including recruitment caps or licence revocation for those that fail to meet the requirements. International student recruitment will continue to align with the UK’s migration and visa framework.

'With a world-class system and deep international partnerships, the UK is exceptionally placed to expand its global footprint and ensure that this country's education continues to set the standard worldwide,' he said.

The strategy also aims to strengthen Britain’s global soft power. The Department for Education noted that British universities have educated more than 50 current world leaders and international students contribute an estimated 560 pounds in benefits to every UK citizen.

'Generations of world leaders, top scientists and great cultural figures have benefited from some form of UK education creating lasting partnerships and strengthening links between countries.

Through this ambitious strategy, we will grow education exports and work with our diplomatic network and the British Council to strengthen education systems around the world,' said Baroness Jennifer Chapman, a minister at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

CUET PG 2026 registration, fee payment date extended again; fill form by January 23

New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has extended the Common University Entrance Test for Postgraduate (CUET PG) 2026 application date again. Candidates can now apply for the CUET PG 2026 exam till January 23. The CUET PG entrance exam 2026 application link is available on the official website, exams.nta.nic.in/cuet-pg. The application fee payment last date is January 25.

Earlier, the last date to apply for CUET PG 2026 was January 14; however, it was extended to January 20 and then again to January 23. As per the CUET PG revised dates, the application form correction can be done between January 28 to January 30 till 11:50 PM.

The CUET PG registration fee for the general category candidates is Rs 700, while the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Caste- Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) category candidates is Rs 600.

Those who are applying for two papers need to pay double the fee. For applicants outside India, the fee is Rs 3,500 for one subject paper.

The CUET PG 2026 exam will be held in computer-based mode. The paper will have 75 multiple-choice questions for 300 marks. New Delhi: Indian student enrolments for higher education in the United States have witnessed a sharp and unprecedented decline in the first year of President Donald Trump’s second term due to changes in immigration policies, tighter visa scrutiny and policy uncertainty disrupting long-standing education and migration pathways. As per study-abroad consultants, enrolments from India have fallen by nearly 70 to 75 per cent which is one of the steepest drops till now.

As President Trump completes one year back in the White House, immigration is one of the most unsettled concerns of his second presidency. From students and skilled professionals to long-term green card holders, Indians have found themselves navigating sudden policy shifts, fear of revocations and shrinking opportunities, with education being among the hardest hit sectors.

Fall 2025 intake sees sharp decline

During the fall 2025 intake which was between August to October, US universities faced the first sign of trouble which accounts for nearly 70 per cent of the total annual intake of international students. According to overseas education consultants, this intake witnessed the sharpest fall in the case of Indian enrolments.

One of the major factors behind the decline was the severe shortage of visa interview slots at US consulates in India. Those students who secured university admissions earlier were unable to schedule interviews in time, which eventually abandon or deferred the US plans. Only those who completed the applications by February or March 2025 managed to move forward.

Spring semester intake hit by visa crunch

Students who deferred their plans to the Spring intake (January to March) with the hope that visa conditions would improve were disappointed. The visa appointment slots continued to remain scarce while scrutiny of applicants’ social media activity intensified.

Consultants say the reversing years of US dominance as the top study destination for Indians prolonged uncertainty has forced students to explore alternative destinations such as Canada, the UK, Australia and Europe.

Student visa revocations

Indian students already studying in the US found that by mid-year data from the US Department of State indicated that nearly 8,000 student visas had been revoked up to December 2025.

In April 2025, several Indian students began receiving emails from their Designated School Officials (DSOs) informing them that the F-1 visa status had been revoked. Many students were also asked to leave the country within few weeks. In several instance, the revocations were linked to past criminal charges that had already been dismissed or resolved.

H-1B fee hike adds pressure on skilled workers

Skilled migration particularly the H-1B visa programme remained under intense political scrutiny. Proposals such as introducing a USD 100,000 H-1B fee and repeated calls to scale down the programme unsettled both employers and foreign professionals.

According to USCIS data, Indians account for nearly 72 per cent of all H-1B visa holders with the majority employed in the IT and technology sectors. Companies responded by delaying onboarding, freezing visa transfers and in some cases revoking job offers.

Visa revocations, deportations surge

Over the past 12 months nearly one lakh visas across categories of which a large share belonging to Indians were revoked, as per the US State Department data. The surge of deportations has not been seen in decades.

In the year 2025, around 3,800 individuals were deported with Indian nationals among the worst affected. As per a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) report most Indians removed from the US were from Washington DC (3,414) and Houston (234) and this included 45 students.

Adding to the strain, the US State Department laid down a rule warning H-1B workers and H-4 dependents to keep their social media accounts public for visa vetting. As per officials, posts critical of the US could potentially lead to visa cancellations or deportation.

At the same time, the Department of Homeland Security ended automatic extensions of Employment Authorisation Documents (EADs). Earlier, foreign nationals could continue working for up to 540 days while renewal applications were pending. The new rule forces workers to stop employment immediately after permit expiry unless renewals are approved.

Candidates applying with the late fee need to pay an additional amount of Rs 5,000. The application link is available at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.

The NIFT 2026 entrance exam is scheduled to be held on February 8. NIFTEE exam is conducted for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate fashion and design programmes which include Bachelor of Design (BDes), Bachelor of Fashion Technology (BFTech), Master of Design (MDes) and Master of Fashion Management (MFM).

New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has decided to defer the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026 in West Bengal dated for January 23, due to Saraswati Puja celebrations. The exam conducting authority has stated that students in West Bengal will be given a new exam date from the JEE Main session 1 schedule.

The change comes after several candidates requested it due to the festival falling on the same day. Affected candidates will be informed about the new exam date through official NTA notifications.

75 per cent of India’s HEIs not industry ready, 16 per cent of colleges achieve graduate placement: Report

New Delhi: Nearly 75 per cent of higher education institutions in India are still not prepared to meet industry requirements despite employability becoming a key focus area for universities and colleges. The gap continues to raise concerns about the job readiness of graduates entering an increasingly competitive labour market.

The findings come from a new report released recently which underscores persistent structural challenges within the higher education institues. The study draws insights from 1,071 institutions spanning public, private and deemed universities along with autonomous and affiliated colleges across the country.

'What stands out in this report is the clear gap between aspiration and execution. While employability remains a central objective, a significant number of institutions are yet to fully align their curricula with industry needs, build strong employer partnerships, or integrate recognised industry certifications into their programmes,' said TeamLease EdTech founder and chief executive officer Shantanu Rooj, as per reports.

Key findings-

75 per cent of institutions are not industry-ready.
16.67 per cent of institutions achieve placement rates of 76 to 100 per cent within six months of graduation.
8.6 per cent report full industry alignment across programmes. 16.9 per cent report partial alignment in select courses.
Only 9.68 per cent use live industry projects, while 37.8 per cent have no internship integration.
5.44 per cent of institutions report highly active alumni networks.
Only 7.56 per cent integrate ‘professors of practice’ across multiple programmes. 15.46 per cent of institutions limit this to a few departments.

Curriculum misalignment impacts graduate employability

The report highlighted that although curriculum alignment with industry needs is underway it remains largely confined to individual departments or specific programmes rather than institution-wide reform. This fragmented approach limits students’ exposure to real-world work environments and restricts the ability to build practical, job-relevant skills before graduation.

Weak internship structures, minimal use of live industry projects and underutilised alumni networks further hamper employability. As per the study, low alumni engagement reduces access to informal hiring channels, mentorship opportunities and referrals that are specifically critical during early career stages.

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has notified new regulations, the University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026 with the aim to make India’s colleges and universities more inclusive and discrimination-free. The rules are meant to firmly address caste-based discrimination in higher education.

The regulations place clear responsibility on institutions to prevent unfair treatment, create strong complaint-handling systems and support students and staff from disadvantaged communities. They also give the UGC the power to strictly act against institutions that fail to comply.

These rules apply to all Higher Education Institutions including universities, colleges and institutions deemed to be universities. Every student, teacher, non-teaching staff member and administrator is covered under these regulations.

Promote equity which means giving everyone a fair chance and equal access to rights and opportunities.
Ensure that no discrimination is allowed or ignored on campus.

The Ombudsperson will try to resolve the matter within a fixed time period.

New Delhi: Harvard University saw a sharp drop in the number of Indian students in the fall of 2025, even after reporting the highest proportion of international students till now. As per the data released by the university, Indian students' enrolment fell by about 31 per cent compared with the previous academic year.

This comes along with the recent data, where it is found that international students made up a larger share of Harvard’s overall student population than ever before. Despite funding cuts, visa challenges and political pressure from the Trump administration on US universities, the rise in the enrollment of international students in the university can be seen.

In the fall of 2025, international students accounted for 28 per cent of Harvard’s total enrolment which is a total of 6,749 students. This is the highest share recorded since at least 2002. While the total number of international students rose by only about 50 students less than a 1 per cent increase it stood out in a year when foreign enrolment across US universities fell by 1 per cent nationwide.

Indian enrolment drops, China leads growth

In fall 2025, Harvard enrolled 545 students from India across its schools. This was a significant decline from the 788 Indian students and scholars enrolled during the 2024–25 academic year.

In contrast, enrolment from China increased with 1,452 students from the country in fall 2025, up from 1,203 the year before. Chinese students continue to be the largest international group on campus. Enrolment from South Korea also rose by nearly 9 per cent, while student numbers from India, the UK and Canada either declined or remained flat.

Australia reclassifies India in 'highest-risk' tier for student visas, tightens scrutiny

New Delhi: Australia has placed India in the highest-risk category for student visas. This move will make the application process stricter for Indian students planning to study in Australia. Under Australia’s student visa assessment system, countries are ranked from Assessment Level 1 (lowest risk) to Assessment Level 3 (highest risk). Along with other South Asian countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan, India has now been moved from Level 2 to Level 3.

The new classification came into effect on January 8, 2026. This is a significant change as India is one of Australia’s largest sources of international students with nearly 140,000 Indian students enrolled out of a total of around 650,000 international students in the country.

With India now in Assessment Level 3 (AL3), Indian students will face greater scrutiny when applying for Australian student visas. As per Australian authorities, the change is meant to address emerging integrity issues while still allowing genuine students to access quality education.

Under the new rules, students will need to submit more detailed documents, including stronger proof of financial capacity, English language proficiency and evidence that they genuinely intend to study and return after completing the course. Former senior immigration official Abul Rizvi explained that visa officers may go beyond paperwork such as calling universities to verify transcripts or contacting banks to confirm financial statements.

Australia’s Minister for International Education, Julian Hill, said the country remains an attractive option for students and described it as 'the least worst country of choice' among the major destinations which include the US, UK and Canada.

Fake degree concerns, uncertain future

One possible reason behind this is a recent fake degree scandal in India. Kerala Police uncovered a large racket that allegedly supplied fraudulent certificates to over 10 lakh people, some of whom were reportedly used for overseas education and jobs.

Australian Senator Malcolm Roberts accused the government of not acting strongly enough against this issue. He claimed that thousands of foreign students in Australia were found using purchased or fake degrees, particularly in sectors like aged care and early childhood education.

He stated, 'Police in India have allegedly seized 100,000 forged certificates from 22 universities, with 1 million-plus likely used for jobs abroad," Roberts wrote on X on January 6.

"I warned about this in August (and asked questions during October Estimates) - 23,000 foreign students in Australia were found with 'purchased' degrees, many in aged care and early childhood.'

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has released the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) 2026 admit card today, January 13. Candidates can download the IIT JAM admit card 2026 through the official website, joaps.iitb.ac.in. The enrollment ID and password are required to log in and access the hall ticket.

The JAM 2026 exam is scheduled to be held on February 15 in two shifts. Shift 1 will be conducted from 9:30 AM to 12:30 noon, while shift 2 will be from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. New Delhi: A committee appointed by the central government has proposed major changes to India’s high school education system to reduce students’ growing dependence on coaching centres. The panel has suggested limiting coaching hours, aligning school curricula with competitive exams like the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The panel has also suggested to give more importance to board exam results in college admissions.

As per sources, the recommendations are aimed at strengthening schools so that students do not rely on external coaching. The proposals come amid rising concerns over student stress, the rise of dummy schools and the influence of the coaching industry.

The committee has recommended capping coaching classes at 2 to 3 hours a day and redesigning school curricula to better reflect the demands of post-school competitive entrance exams. It has also proposed exploring the possibility of introducing competitive tests in Class 11 and increasing the weightage of board exam scores in college admissions.

The committee headed by Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education was set up by the Ministry of Education on June 17, 2025. Members of the panel include CBSE chairman Rahul Singh, National Testing Agency (NTA) Director General Rajesh Lakhani, and professors from IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras and NIT Trichy. It aims was to evaluate gaps in school education, the 'effectiveness and fairness of competitive entrance examinations', the rise of dummy schools and the growth of coaching institutes.

During the meetings, members highlighted that coaching centres have 'emerged to fill certain gaps', and stressed that the 'long-term solution must come from strengthening the school ecosystem itself'.

Disconnect between school learning, entrance exams flagged

The committee identified a major 'disconnect between school curricula and the demands of competitive exams such as JEE and NEET', calling the transition from Class 10 to Class 11 a key stress point for students.

It observed that the 'lack of alignment between CBSE’s analytical and conceptual approach and the objective, MCQ-based format of entrance exams' is a 'root cause' of students’ dependence on coaching centres. The panel noted that this mismatch has contributed to the rise of dummy schools and a parallel education system.

The committee also pointed out that many school teachers are 'not adequately trained to teach beyond board exam requirements', while coaching centres 'often employ subject experts, including engineers and medical graduates to deliver targeted instruction.'

As per the members, schools lack the ecosystem that coaching institutes provide, such as 'regular testing, performance analytics and curated study materials'. As a result, students seek structured preparation outside school.

The panel also flagged concerns about the psychological toll that competitive exams take and the pressure on students to get enrolled in coaching from a very early age, warning that high-stakes, single-attempt exams promote a narrow view of success. The 'absence of structured counselling and career guidance in schools', it said, further worsens the problem.

New Delhi: Harvard University has enrolled a record number of international students in the current academic year even after the Trump administration set a limit on student visas and federal funding for the Ivy League institution. According to data by the university that was released recently, international students made up 28 per cent of Harvard’s total enrollment in the fall of 2025 which is equal to 6,749 students.

This record is the highest number since at least 2002. The increase is moderate however, it stands out at a time when international enrollment across US universities is declining.

Harvard’s international student population grew by nearly 50 students which represents an increase of less than 1 per cent from last year. Chinese students remain the largest group of international students at Harvard. New Delhi: The State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell, Maharashtra, has started the MHT CET 2026 registration process for admission to various undergraduate (UG) programmes in the institutions across the state. Candidates can apply online for MHT CET 2026 through the official website, cetcell.mahacet.org. The MHT CET 2026 application form can be submitted till February 12.

New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the advance intimation for allotment of examination city for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026 session 1 today, January 8. It has activated the JEE Main 2026 exam city intimation slip link on the official portal at jeemain.nta.nic.in. Candidates need to use their application number and password to check JEE Main city slip.

Vaishno Devi Medical College Controversy: MBBS seats revoked; here’s what will happen to admitted students

New Delhi: The National Medical Commission’s (NMC) Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) has withdrawn the permission given to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence to run an MBBS programme with 50 seats for the 2025–26 academic year. The medical college located in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir received approval to admit 50 MBBS students on September 8, 2025. The teaching activities in the institute reportedly began in November 2025.

However, the approval was withdrawn after an inspection by the medical regulator found serious gaps in meeting the minimum standards required to run a medical college. As per officials, the institute did not meet key norms related to infrastructure, availability of faculty and other essential requirements.

A letter issued by the NMC reads, 'Continuation of the institution under such circumstances would have seriously jeopardised the quality of medical education and adversely affected the academic interests of the students.'

As per NMC, the action was taken after multiple complaints were received against the institute. Based on the inspection findings, MARB concluded that the college was not eligible to admit MBBS students for the upcoming academic session.

What happens to students already admitted?

Students who have already been admitted for the 2025–26 academic year will not lose their MBBS seats. The NMC has clarified that these students will be shifted to other government medical colleges within Jammu and Kashmir. The relocation will be done by creating supernumerary seats which means additional seats over and above the approved intake of those colleges as per existing rules.

'To safeguard the interests of the students already admitted for the academic year 2025–26, the state or UT authorities have been authorised to accommodate such students in other medical institutions within the Union Territory, as supernumerary seats, in accordance with applicable norms,' NMC's letter read.

What is the controversy?

After the initial letter of permission was issued, the NMC received several complaints against the institute. These complaints alleged that the college lacked proper infrastructure, sufficient clinical material and qualified full-time teaching staff and resident doctors.

Concerns were also raised about a low number of inpatients and outpatients, poor bed occupancy and other shortcomings. A surprise inspection was conducted to 'verify the veracity of the complaints', following which the commission found that the 'deficiencies were gross and substantial in nature.'

The college was also at the centre of local protests. Some Hindu organisations and residents demanded reservation for Hindu candidates stating that the medical college was built largely using donations from devotees of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.

Earlier, the NMC had rejected the institute’s request to place all 50 MBBS seats under the All India Quota through the Medical Counselling Committee stating that seat-sharing policies cannot be changed for individual colleges.

The institute had also drawn attention after reports claimed that 43 students from a single community were admitted in the first batch. College authorities however maintained that all admitted students are residents of Jammu and Kashmir.

DU releases UG admission brochure 2026; CUET subject eligibility rules remain unchanged

New Delhi: The University of Delhi has released the detailed information brochure for DU undergraduate (UG) admission for the academic session 2026–27. Candidates can access and download the brochure through the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS-UG) portal, admission.uod.ac.in.

DU UG admissions 2026 will be held through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG). As per the brochure, there are no major changes in the DU UG admission process this year. The university has decided to retain its subject eligibility rules even after the University Grants Commission (UGC) had relaxed norms allowing students to appear for CUET subjects not studied in Class 12.

Delhi University has made it mandatory for candidates to appear in CUET UG 2026 only for those subjects they studied in Class 12. While the UGC had permitted flexibility in subject selection, DU has chosen to maintain its existing eligibility framework. Registration guidelines for different categories

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has announced the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 schedule. As per the GATE exam date, the entrance test for admission to Master of Technology (MTech), Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes on February 7,8,14 and 15, 2026.

As per the GATE paper pattern, the exam will be in two shifts. Shift 1 is scheduled from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and shift 2 from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM.

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH) has scripted a new milestone in its placement history. A final-year computer science engineering student has secured a record-breaking annual package of Rs 2.5 crore, the highest ever in the institute's placement history.

Edward Nathan Varghese, 21-year-old final-year computer science engineering student, has received a staggering Rs 2.5 crore package from Optiver, a global trading firm based in the Netherlands. This IITian will join as a software engineer in July after successfully converting a two-month summer internship into a pre-placement offer. Interestingly, Edward was one of the only two students shortlisted for the internship. He will be receiving the final offer after successfully completing the training, along with a six-week project at the Optiver company.

New Delhi: The ninth edition of Pariksha pe Charcha (PPC) has received over three crore registrations for participation in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's annual interaction event with students. The data was shared by officials from the Ministry of Education (MoE).

The organiser of the event is conducting an online competition on the MyGov portal from December 1 to January 11 to shortlist participants for the event. Students from Classes 6 to 12, besides teachers and parents, are also eligible to participate in this online competition.

NMC clarifies rules for BS course students enrolled in foreign medical colleges

New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released a notification corrigendum to its public notice dated December 7, 2023. This is related to students who had taken admission in the BS Course or are pursuing the Bachelor of Science (BS) Course in foreign medical institutes. This applies to both online mode or in physical modes before the publication of the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021, on November 18, 2021.

The Commission has clarified that such students shall be governed by the Screening Test Regulation, 2002. However, such students must undergo an additional year of internship in India to ensure adequate clinical exposure, besides maintaining uniform standards in medical education and practice. The NMC has clearly said in a communication to all medical colleges and institutes.

New Delhi: The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) will close the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2026 counselling registration today at 10 PM for admission to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes. Candidates can complete the CLAT 2026 counselling registration through the official website, consortiumofnlus.ac.in.

In the CLAT counselling registration timeline, candidates can select a minimum of 15 preferences for UG and at 5 for PG programmes. The candidates can also select more preferences.

The Ministry of Education, Government of India has shared details of multiple international scholarships available for students seeking to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD and diploma programmes.

Among these scholarships, the Government of the Russian Federation has announced 300 scholarships exclusively for Indian students seeking admission to Russian universities.

UP government mandates newspaper reading in schools to boost learning, reduce screen time

New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government has made newspaper reading compulsory for students of state-run basic and secondary schools. The decision has been taken to develop regular reading habits among children, reduce excessive mobile screen time and improve the critical and logical thinking skills.

An order issued on December 23 by Additional Chief Secretary (Basic and Secondary Education) Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma stated that both Hindi and English newspapers should become an essential part of daily school activities. The directive follows an earlier order issued in November that focused on ways to promote a strong reading culture among students.

As per TOI report, explaining the intent behind the directive, Sen Sharma stated, 'These are directions as well as advice, to be followed by state-run schools, but others can also follow if they find sense.'

Building knowledge, language, critical thinking

Regular newspaper reading has several benefits as it strengthen students’ general knowledge and understanding of current affairs which is also important for future competitive exams. Moreover, vocabulary, language style and writing skills are also improved through it.

Sen Sharma stated reading diverse perspectives 'develops critical thinking and the ability to distinguish between right and wrong in students, making them aware in the era of fake news.'

Connecting students to society, real life

Another major benefit mentioned in the order is increased awareness of local community issues, public projects and social developments. This, the order says, helps students understand how local events are connected to national and global issues.

The order also points out that puzzles like Sudoku, crosswords and word games in newspapers train the brain for logical thinking and problem-solving. For students from Classes 6 to 12, schools have been directed to make activities such as maintaining scrapbooks with important news cuttings, participating in weekly discussions on editorials, and analysing news reports mandatory.

Quizzes, news-based learning

Schools have also been asked to organise quizzes, crossword puzzles and Sudoku-based activities to improve reasoning ability, concentration and make learning more engaging.

JEE Main 2026: Photo verification certificate mandatory non-Aadhar applicants by Jan 7

New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has issued an important notice for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026 applicants who did not use Aadhaar as the identity proof while filling out the application form. The candidates have been asked to complete an additional verification step by January 7.

As per the NTA, those candidates who submitted documents such as a PAN card, Indian passport or non-Indian passport which applying for JEE Main 2026 need to upload a Photo Verification Certificate. This is mandatory to ensure proper identity verification before the entrance exam.

The NTA has informed the respective candidates via email regarding the verification. Candidates need to log in to the official JEE Main website at jeemain.nta.nic.in and download the Photo Verification Certificate from the dashboard. Once it has been downloaded, candidates need to fill in the required details, paste a recent passport-size photograph and get the certificate attested by the principal or headmaster of the school or college.

Once the certificate is completed and attested, candidates need to scan it and upload it in PDF format using the link on the JEE Main candidate portal.

As per the instructions of NTA, the signature of the school or college head must partially overlap both the photograph and the certificate. If this instruction is not followed then the document may be rejected. Candidates are also advised to carry a printed copy of the Photo Verification Certificate to the exam centre on the exam day as it will be used by officials for physical identity verification.

School Winter Holidays 2025: UP, Delhi, Punjab and other states vacation dates

New Delhi: With the onset of winter, temperatures have dropped in many areas and several state education departments and school boards across India have announced winter vacation. Along with the cold wave, there is rising pollution in some of the states and this vacation will protect students allowing schools to plan exams and academic activities smoothly.

While most states have declared holidays starting from late December the dates vary widely depending on weather conditions and local decisions. Some states have also issued special instructions for board classes and clarified the stance on holidays falling on important national days.

Uttar Pradesh

The Uttar Pradesh government has stated that schools will remain open on December 25 to mark the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee thereby cancelling the Christmas holiday. However, due to severe cold, schools in several districts have been temporarily closed. As per the announced schedule, winter vacations in UP are expected to run from December 20 to December 31, 2025.

Punjab

As per the School Education Department of Punjab, the winter vacations started on December 21, 2025. Schools in the state will reopen on January 12, 2026.

Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir follows a longer winter break due to harsh weather. Schools for Class 1 to Class 8 will remain closed from December 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026. For Class 9 to Class 12, vacations will be from December 11, 2025, to February 22, 2026.

Delhi

The Delhi government has announced winter vacations from December 23, 2025, to January 1, 2026, for all schools under its jurisdiction.

Haryana

In Haryana, winter vacations for both government and private schools will be observed from January 1 to January 15, 2026. The education department has also informed that Class 10 and Class 12 students may be called for practical exams during this period.

Kerala

Schools in Kerala will remain closed for the winter holidays from December 24, 2025 to January 4, 2026.

Rajasthan

The Board of Secondary Education Rajasthan has declared winter vacations from December 25, 2025 to January 5, 2026.

Madhya Pradesh

In Madhya Pradesh, winter vacations will begin from December 23, 2025. The reopening date will be announced separately.

Kendriya Vidyalayas
