22 labourers feared dead as truck plunges 1,000 feet into gorge in Arunachal

At least 22 Assam labourers are feared dead after a truck carrying them fell nearly 1,000 feet into a gorge on the Hayuliang–Chaglagam road in Arunachal Pradesh. Rescue teams have recovered 13 bodies so far as operations continue in the difficult terrain. Emergency teams rushed to the remote accident site soon after receiving the alert.

New Delhi: At least 22 daily wage workers from Assam’s Tinsukia district are feared dead after the truck carrying them veered off a mountain road and crashed into a deep gorge near the India-China border in Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday. Rescue agencies have so far retrieved 13 bodies, while search operations continue amid extremely difficult terrain conditions.

The PMO has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs for kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.

Rescue hampered by terrain

The tragedy occurred along the Hayuliang–Chaglagam road, where a vehicle transporting 21 labourers tumbled nearly 1,000 feet down a steep slope. The workers, all residents of the Gelapukhuri Tea Estate in Tinsukia, were on their way to Hayuliang for construction work when the truck reportedly slipped on the hilly road and plunged into the gorge.

Emergency teams rushed to the remote accident site soon after receiving the alert. Local authorities, police personnel, and disaster response units launched a coordinated operation to look for survivors and recover the remaining bodies, though officials said the landscape continues to pose major challenges.

Victims identified by police

Those believed to have lost their lives in the crash include Budheswar Deep, Rahul Kumar, Samir Deep, Joon Kumar, Pankaj Manki, Ajay Manki, Bijay Kumar, Abhay Bhumij, Rohit Manki, Birendra Kumar, Agar Tanti, Dhiren Chetia, Rajani Naag, Deep Gowala, Ramchabak Sonar, Sonatan Naag, Sanjay Kumar, Karan Kumar, and Jonas Munda.

Six killed in Nashik

In a separate incident on December 7 in Maharashtra, six people died after their car plunged into a 600-foot ravine at Saptashring Garh Ghat in Nashik’s Kalwan taluka. The accident occurred around 4 pm, leaving the Toyota Innova severely damaged. All six victims — Kirti Patel (50), Raseela Patel (50), Vitthal Patel (65), Lata Patel (60), Vachan Patel (60) and Maniben Patel (70) — were residents of Pimpalgaon Baswant in Niphad taluka. Authorities confirmed that they succumbed at the scene.
