At a Vatican vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV praised forgiveness after Diane Foley, mother of slain American journalist James Foley, shared her healing journey. Foley recalled forgiving Islamic State militant Alexanda Kotey, convicted in her son’s 2014 beheading. The pope said pain must not lead to violence, stressing love and mercy triumph over hatred. "What greater freedom can we hope to achieve than that which comes from forgiveness?” he said.

Chhattisgarh hikes aid for martyrs’ kin to Rs 50 lakh, raises grants for awardees, disabled soldiers

The Chhattisgarh government on Monday approved a major hike in financial assistance for soldiers and their families. Ex-gratia for kin of martyrs has been raised from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 50 lakh, while gallantry awardees will now get Rs 1 crore. Disabled soldiers will receive Rs 30 lakh, up from Rs 10 lakh. CM Vishnu Deo Sai said the government is committed to honouring soldiers’ sacrifices and ensuring their families’ welfare.

Over 1 lakh jobs given in 15 months of BJP rule in Odisha, says CM Majhi

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday claimed that 1,07,926 jobs have been provided in the state during 15 months of BJP governance—30,032 in the government sector and 77,894 in private firms. Addressing the 11th ‘Nijukti Mela,’ he said another 96,000 jobs will be created by June 2026. At the fair, 1,686 people received appointment letters, with the health department recording the highest intake at 982.

Protests erupt in Karbi Anglong over viral video of BJP MLA Bidya Sing Engleng

Several organisations, including the Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee, Mahila Congress, APHLC, and Women Karbi Students' Association, staged protests in Diphu after an obscene video of BJP MLA Bidya Sing Engleng went viral. Six arrested for assaulting Dalit man in UP’s Mayil area

Police arrested six people for allegedly tying a 24-year-old Dalit man to a tree and assaulting him in Uttar Pradesh’s Mayil area on Sunday. Four killed, three injured as vehicle plunges into gorge in Shimla

Four people, including three Nepalese nationals, were killed and three others injured when their vehicle fell into a deep gorge in Kotkhai, Himachal Pradesh, on Monday. Police said the driver lost control, killing three on the spot while another died during treatment. A case of negligence has been registered. Clash over alleged religious conversion leaves 13 injured in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur

At least 13 people were injured after a clash broke out during a Christian prayer meeting in Bilaspur’s Sipat area on Sunday. Police said tensions erupted when locals and right-wing activists alleged religious conversions were taking place. Stone pelting followed, injuring 10 Christians and three activists. Two FIRs were lodged on cross-complaints under BNS and Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Act.

Jamiat welcomes SC relief on Waqf law, calls it ‘ray of hope’

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court’s interim relief on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, saying it strengthened faith in justice. President Maulana Arshad Madani termed the law "anti-Constitutional” and vowed to continue the legal battle until repeal. The court stayed provisions like the five-year rule for dedicating Waqf property and limited non-Muslim participation in Waqf boards, but declined to suspend the entire Act.

Rijiju hails SC order on Waqf Act as ‘good sign for democracy’

Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court’s interim ruling on the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025, calling it a "very good sign for democracy.” The apex court has stayed provisions such as the clause requiring individuals to have practised Islam for five years to dedicate property as Waqf, but refused to halt the entire law. "The provisions in the Act are beneficial to the entire Muslim community. Misuse, including property encroachments through Waqf Boards, will now be stopped with the new legislation,” Rijiju said in Mumbai, adding that the court was "aware of the whole issue.”

The Supreme Court on Thursday stalled certain provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 but refused to suspend the entire law. It noted that mandatory registration of waqfs was not new.

UP: 2 children dead, 2 missing during Jivitputrika festival rituals

Two boys drowned in Chandauli and two more are feared missing after slipping into the Karmanasa river during Jivitputrika rituals. In Deoria, two children died and one girl remains critical after separate pond accidents while bathing for the festival.
