New Delhi: The IndiGo on Monday cited “compounding effect of multiple factors” as reasons behind the mass delay or cancellations of its flights across the country in the last seven days. Thousands of passengers were left stranded across airports in the country due to the ongoing crisis. The airline’s response came in reply to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)'s show-cause notice.
The DGA on Monday said it received IndiGo’s reply and that the airline was "profusely" apologetic and deeply regretted the inconvenience caused to customers due to the ongoing crisis. The airline has been delaying and cancelling flights since last Tuesday.
Earlier, the DGCA has extended the deadline to respond to its notice by 8 pm on December 8 and said that no further extension for reply would be allowed. With crisis entering its seventh day on Monday, IndiGo CEO Piter Elbers and Chief Operating Officer Isidro Proqueras are likely to be summoned on Wednesday by DGCA’s four-member committee, which has been formed to look into the crisis.
The crisis-hit airline operated more than 1,800 flights across the country on Monday. It was more in comparison to 1,650 airlines that were flown on Sunday. On Monday, 90 percent of IndiGo flights reported On-Time Performance (OTP). The authorities also said that the services of the airlines are also returning back to normal.
Notably, the airlines also paid the refunds of Rs 827 crore to passengers for the cancellation of flights between November 21 to December 7. According to the government, nearly 5.8 lakh customers were impacted due to the crisis.
Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu addressed the situation in the Rajya Sabha on Monday. Addressing the members, he said, “We are not taking this situation easily. We are doing an inquiry. We will take very, very strict action not only for this situation but also as an example.” He will speak in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
