New Delhi: A major blast rocked Delhi near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening, killing at least 12 people and injuring many. The blaze from the blast also spread to one or two nearby cars parked close.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, "We are conducting an investigation. I hope we will find out the cause of the blast very soon." He said that the blast took place in a Hyundai i20 car near the Red Fort at around 7 pm. It damaged three to four vehicles.
CCTV footage and toll both records have shown how the silver Hyundai i20 moved from Faridabad early on Monday morning to the final moments before the explosion near Red Fort. It is a car registered in Haryana with the number HR26. The car was registered in the name of Mohammad Salman. Based on information received by the Gurugram police from the Delhi Police, Mohammad Salman was detained and interrogated.
During interrogation, Salman revealed that he had sold his car a year and a half ago to Devendra, a resident of Delhi's Okhla. Salman has handed over all the documents related to the sale of the car to the Gurugram Police. It was revealed that Devendra, in turn, sold the car to someone in Haryana's Ambala.
The Hyundai i20 was first spotted at 7:30 am at a hospital in Faridabad. At 8:13 am, it was captured by a CCTV footage crossing the Badarpur toll booth and entering Delhi from Faridabad. At around seven minutes later, it stopped briefly at a petrol pump near Okhla Industrial Area to refuel.
The car travelled throughout Delhi from the morning, and its route included Kashmere Gate, Sunehri Masjid, and Darya Ganj. It journeyed through areas that are densely populated and have high security. According to police, it was not a random movement, but the driver was actually trying to find the ideal location for the blast.
As per CCTV footage, the i20 was parked near the historic Sunehri Masjid, adjacent to the Red Fort, from 3:19 pm for more than three hours. At 6:22 pm, it left the parking lot, went towards Chandni Chowk, and then came back near Red Fort. It was seen on Subhash Marg minutes later, near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, where the blast took place. It could be seen in the CCTV clip that the driver was wearing a black mask.
