New Delhi: Even as IndiGo is pulling out all the stops to fix one of the worst operational crisis in its 20-year history, the airline was hit by multiple flight cancellations for the fifth consecutive day on Saturday. Hundreds of domestic flights were cancelled today across major airports, including Delhi and Mumbai.
With no immediate sign of a quick resolution of the issue, authorities said the situation remains “under close watch". IndiGo has attributed the ongoing crisis to a pilot staffing crunch that it said was caused by misjudgement and planning gaps in implementing the new pilot duty rules.
More than 400 domestic flights of IndiGo have been cancelled since morning as the ongoing fiasco surrounding India's largest airline entered its fifth day. The flight cancellations and delays have left thousands of passengers stranded at airports.
Cancelled flights on Day 5
As many as 86 flights were cancelled at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in New Delhi, while 109 flights were cancelled at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
A total of 19 flight cancellations were witnessed at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) in Gujarat. The Pune airport reported 42 flight cancellations, while at the Chennai Airport, around 30 IndiGo flights were cancelled.
In Bengaluru, 50 flights of the airline were cancelled at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) while the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad saw 69 domestic flights getting cancelled.
IndiGo's apology
On Friday night, IndiGo issued an apology statement on the social media platform X.
"We do deeply apologise and understand how difficult the past few days have been for many of you. While this will not get resolved overnight, we assure you that we will do everything in our capacity to help you in the meantime and to bring our operations back to normal at the earliest," IndiGo said.
