The move comes as opposition parties scramble to counter the BJP's southern outreach ahead of the crucial 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Senior leaders of the India Alliance are scheduled to hold crucial deliberations this evening at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge to finalize their strategy. If consensus emerges, the September 9 vice-presidential election could witness an unprecedented Tamil-versus-Tamil contest, transforming what is typically a low-key affair into a high-stakes political battle with significant implications for southern politics.
At 68, Tiruchi Siva brings to the table an impressive political legacy spanning over four decades. First elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1996, the DMK leader has since been re-elected four times, making him one of the Upper House's most experienced members. His legislative achievements include piloting the landmark Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2014 - a rare private member's bill that was passed unanimously.
Siva's political roots run deep in Tamil Nadu's soil. His initiation into politics came during the dark days of the Emergency when as a student activist, he was incarcerated for a year under the draconian MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act). Rising through DMK's ranks, he served as the party's youth wing secretary for 15 years before taking on more senior organizational roles. His potential nomination is being seen as a masterstroke that could galvanize opposition unity while countering the BJP's attempts to make inroads in Tamil Nadu through C.P. Radhakrishnan's candidature.
The BJP's nomination of CP Radhakrishnan, a former Coimbatore MP and current Maharashtra Governor, was widely seen as an attempt to woo the influential Kongu Vellala Gounder community in western Tamil Nadu. However, the India Alliance's potential countermove with Tiruchi Siva threatens to turn the tables by presenting voters with a more authentic Tamil voice - one deeply rooted in the state's political and social movements.
