Chennai: The lingering low-pressure area, the remnant of Cyclone Ditwah, continues to influence Tamil Nadu's weather, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue fresh rainfall alerts even as the system is predicted to weaken further in the next six hours. An orange alert has been sounded for Coimbatore, Erode, and the Nilgiris districts, warning of very heavy rainfall today.
Cyclone Ditwah upate
While the core of the cyclonic system has degenerated and is currently centered about 100 km off the Chennai coast, its peripheral effects remain potent. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in eight districts: Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Tirunelveli (Nellai), Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Salem, and Namakkal. Additionally, heavy rain is also possible in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur districts.

The IMD update indicates that the low-pressure area is likely to move in a south westerly direction towards the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast before dissipating. Along with the rainfall, land winds blowing at speeds of up to 45 kmph are predicted across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. For Chennai specifically, the forecast suggests moderate rainfall.
