Tamil Nadu transfers 70 IPS officers in New Year eve reshuffle; Key promotions announced

Chennai: In a significant administrative overhaul ahead of the New Year, the Tamil Nadu government late tonight ordered the transfer of approximately 70 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers across the state. The reshuffle comes as several senior officers in key positions are set to retire, prompting a wide-ranging realignment of the police leadership.

The transfers include notable promotions for several high-ranking officers, with new appointments to crucial posts such as the Director General of Police (DGP) of the Armed Forces, Cyber Crime, and the Economic Offences Wing.

In one of the most prominent changes, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Davidson Devasirvatham has been promoted to the rank of DGP. He has been appointed as the DGP of the Tamil Nadu Armed Police. This move places him at the helm of one of the state’s key armed police units.

New Leadership for Cyber Crime and Economic Offences Wing

The government has also elevated ADGP Sandeep Mittal, appointing him as the DGP of the Cyber Crime wing. In a parallel promotion, ADGP Bala Nagadevi has been raised to the DGP rank and assigned to lead the Economic Offences Wing (EOW). These appointments signal a strengthened focus on tackling modern financial and digital crimes in the state.

Key Transfers in Greater Chennai and CBCID

Several commissioners in the Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate have been reassigned. Avadi Police Commissioner Shankar and Tambaram Commissioner Abhin Dinesh Modak have been transferred to new posts. Replacing them, Southern Zone Inspector General (IG) Prem Anand Sinha has been promoted to ADGP and appointed as the new Police Commissioner of Avadi.

In the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID), IG Anbu has been promoted to the rank of ADGP and appointed as the ADGP of CBCID, taking charge of the state’s premier investigation agency.

New Appointments for Law and Order and Tambaram Commissionerate

ADGP Maheshwar Dayal has been appointed as the ADGP of Law and Order for Tamil Nadu, a critical role overseeing statewide policing operations. Meanwhile, ADGP Amalraj has been appointed as the new Police Commissioner of Tambaram, succeeding Abhin Dinesh Modak.

State-wide Reshuffle Affects 70 IPS Officers

The transfer orders encompass a total of 70 IPS officers across various ranges and departments in Tamil Nadu. The reshuffle is seen as an effort to fill impending vacancies due to retirements and to inject new leadership into vital positions as the new year begins. While some officers have been transferred within their current ranks, a select group, including those mentioned, have received concurrent promotions.

The state government had recently issued transfer orders for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers as well, making this a comprehensive year-end bureaucratic realignment aimed at ensuring administrative continuity and fresh strategic direction for 2026.
