New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari alleged an attack on his convoy by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers. He said that the incident happened when he was visiting a political engagement in Purulia in Paschim Medinipur. He demanded action against those responsible for attacking him and sat in protest at the Chandrakona police station, demanding registration of an FIR.
Suvendu Adhikari took to social media platform, 'X' to talk about the attack on his convoy, at approximately 8:20 pm on January 10. In his post, the BJP leader said, "Tonight approximately around 8:20 PM, while I was returning from Purulia, at Chandrakona Road; Paschim Medinipur district, I was viciously attacked by TMC goons. These cowards, emboldened by the Mamata Banerjee regime's culture of violence and impunity, attacked me right in the presence of the Mamata Police. The very guardians of law stood by like mute spectators."
Adhikari termed the attack as not just a personal attack on him, but an attack on every opposition voice in West Bengal. He said that this attack on him showed the TMC's desperation, as they cannot face the growing opposition to their rule and people's anger.
The incident reportedly took place near Chandrakona Road and led to a major standoff between BJP and Trinamool Congress workers. There were also protests by the BJP workers.
Talking about the attack, Adhikari said that sticks and bamboos were used to strike his vehicle as it crossed a busy intersection. He also blamed the West Bengal police, saying that security personnel present at the spot remained mute spectators as the attack unfolded.
Adhikari then approached the local police station, the Chandrakona Police Station and sat on a dharna there. Talking to reporters, he said, "We are here for justice. The elections aren't far. These people are about to lose. They want to demolish the BJP... TMC Youth Wing President, TMC Labour Union leader... were there... I have given the names of the involved. I am urging that an FIR should be registered, and these people should be arrested."
He described the entire incident as a "lawless dictatorship". He further said that as elections were approaching, the ruling party was "desperate" and this attack was a clear indication of the fear that the TMC had of losing to the BJP in this year's Assembly elections.
As Adhikari sat on dharna inside the police station, BJP workers gathered outside and raised slogans against the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government in the state. The TMC meanwhile said that the attack was a result of "public anger" rather than an organised party attack. They blamed the BJP for trying to create a narrative of victimhood as they lack grassroot support.
