New Delhi: Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed an unbeaten century against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Friday, October 10. The left-hand opener etched his name into the record books with his unbeaten knock of 173 on day 1.
Jaiswal recorded his fifth 150+ score innings, and all came before he turned 24. He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar, as the master blaster had only four 150+ scores before he turned 24, but Jaiswal outdid his record with 173* against West Indies in the second and final Test match.
The 24-year-old batter also surpassed Steven Smith and Javed Miandad, who were also tied with four 150+ scores. Jaiswal has now recorded the most 150+ scores by an Indian before turning 24.
Jaiswal also overtook Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma's record of four 150+ scores as an opener. Now he is in the third position with the most 150+ scores as an Indian opener, behind Virender Sehwag (14) and Sunil Gavaskar (11).
Yashasvi Jaiswal equals Virat Kohli's record
Jaiswal is now the second Indian batter to score 150+ on the first day of a Test match twice. He matches Virat Kohli's record, who also scored his second 150+ innings in Delhi against Sri Lanka in 2017, and the first came in Vizag against England in 2016.
Jaiswal recorded his first 150+ innings on the first day against England in Vizag in 2024, and now, in the ongoing second Test match against West Indies, he recorded his second 150+ innings.
India's dominance on first day
Similar to the first Test match in Ahmedabad, India dominated the West Indies again in the series. Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bat first. KL Rahul was looking solid but fell on 38 runs. After the first wicket, Sai Sudarshan and Yashasvi Jaiswal made a 193-run stand for the second wicket.
Sudarshan missed his well-deserved century and was dismissed on 87 runs. Jaiswal completed his seventh century in Test cricket and also recorded his fifth 150+ score. He is still on the crease with an unbeaten 173 runs. Gill is also giving good support, as he is unbeaten on 20 runs at the end of day 1. India are on 318/2 after the end of the play for the first day.
