New PS5 digital edition with reduced 825GB storage to launch September 13: Report

Sony is set to launch a new PlayStation 5 digital edition in Europe on September 13, 2025, but with a twist — the CFI-2100 revision will ship with reduced 825GB storage instead of the current 1TB, while keeping the €499 (~₹48,000) price tag unchanged, according to a Dealabs leak.

New Delhi: Sony is reportedly preparing to launch yet another PlayStation 5 revision, but this time the change may not excite gamers. A fresh leak suggests the upcoming digital-only PS5 model will come with reduced storage capacity, even though its price remains unchanged.

The report, first published by Dealabs, a site with a strong track record of accurate leaks, claims that the new PS5 revision, codenamed CFI-2100, will debut in Europe on September 13, 2025. Unlike past tweaks that often improved cooling or efficiency, this version’s main difference appears to be storage.

What’s new in the PS5 revision

According to the leak, the new PlayStation 5 digital edition will ship with 825GB of storage, instead of the current 1TB drives that Sony began offering with the slimline models released in 2023. Despite the cut, the console is expected to retail at the same €499 price point, roughly ₹48,000 in India when converted (1 USD = ₹87).

Console revisions aren’t new. Since the PS5 launched back in 2020, Sony has rolled out several silent updates. The most visible came in late 2023, when the so-called “PS5 Slim” introduced a detachable disc drive option, letting buyers choose a cheaper digital-only version and add a drive later if they wished. Smaller changes since then have focused on lowering production costs rather than headline-grabbing features.

This CFI-2100 model looks set to continue that trend, with storage being the only downgrade most players will notice.

Why cut storage now?

Gamers might scratch their heads at why Sony would cut storage space when games are only getting bigger. But analysts say the move could be linked to managing hardware supply chains and production costs. Dealabs points out that once the 1TB inventory clears, Sony could be lining up another PS5 refresh later with an upgraded capacity.

It also helps that storage expansion on PS5 is easier now than at launch. Sony allows users to add their own M.2 SSDs, meaning players who need extra space can slot in their preferred drive. Still, with blockbuster titles like Call of Duty or Final Fantasy XVI often exceeding 100GB each, the cut to 825GB will sting for digital-only users.
