OpenAI, the firm behind ChatGPT, has finalised a massive seven-year, $38 billion cloud services agreement with Amazon. This landmark deal marks OpenAIs first major strategic move following a recent restructuring that granted the company greater autonomy to pursue aggressive AI growth.

The agreement will provide OpenAI with access to hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA graphics processors, essential for training and operating its advanced artificial intelligence models. This underscores the AI industry's burgeoning demand for immense computing power to develop systems capable of rivalling human intelligence.

For Amazon, the partnership represents a significant vote of confidence in its cloud unit, Amazon Web Services (AWS). Investors had previously expressed concerns about AWSs competitive standing against rivals such as Microsoft and Google in the escalating AI cloud race.

The substantial deal, coupled with strong growth reported in the September quarter, helped ease these fears, contributing to Amazons shares hitting an all-time high on the day of the announcement. This partnership is poised to strengthen AWS's market position and provide OpenAI with the long-term capacity necessary for scaling its ambitious AI initiatives.
