New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his five-nation Africa tour with a historic visit to Ghana. This is the first visit by an Indian PM in over three decades. During the visit, Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama conferred on him the country’s highest civilian award — the Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana.

PM Modi said the honour was not just a recognition but also a responsibility to deepen India-Ghana ties. He dedicated the award to the aspirations of young people in both nations and the rich cultural heritage they share.

In his speech, PM Modi highlighted India and Ghana’s strong partnership based on shared democratic values and common goals. He spoke of closer cooperation in areas such as agriculture, energy, healthcare, and infrastructure, and stressed the importance of working together to fight terrorism and promote peace.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the honour recognised Modi’s "distinguished statesmanship and global leadership."

This visit marks the start of a significant diplomatic push by India to strengthen relations with Africa and the Global South. BJP leaders also noted that this was PM Modi’s 24th global honour, a sign of India’s growing global presence under his leadership.
