New Delhi: In a recent development in Australia’s Bondi attack, which killed at least 16 people, authorities have revealed that a father–son duo from Pakistan carried out the horrific attack. The New South Wales (NSW) Police confirmed that Sajid Akram (50) and Naveed Akram (24) were behind the “terror attack,” which took place on Sunday during a Hanukkah celebration of the Jewish community.
The Pakistani duo met a grim end, as Sajid was shot dead at the site, while his son Naveed is undergoing treatment in hospital. The NSW Police Commissioner stated that the gunmen are under strict surveillance, adding that the involvement of a third suspect is not being considered at this time.
Reports say the police recovered six firearms from the scene and two improvised explosive devices, which were safely defused. The suspects had been staying at a Campsie address, and their Bonnyrigg home was also searched.
Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that no additional suspects were involved. “We are satisfied that there were two offenders involved in yesterday’s incident,” he said. Further investigations revealed that the two gunmen reportedly lied about going for a fishing trip to Jervis Bay before the attack. Police have not obtained any additional information yet. It was discovered that Sajid Akram, who worked as a fruit vendor, had owned a licensed firearm for about 10 years.
Meanwhile, the NSW Police assured the local Jewish community that they are doing everything possible to gather relevant information about the incident. The police, along with Commonwealth partners, are committed to uncovering the ultimate motive behind the deadly attack and ensuring appropriate punishments for the culprits.
The Bondi attack is considered the deadliest attack in Australia in 30 years. Reacting to the incident, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it “an act of pure evil,” while NSW Premier Chris Minns highlighted the deliberate targeting of Sydney’s Jewish community. To honor the victims, flags across the nation will be flown at half-staff.
