New Delhi: Ford Motor and Renault Group have announced a new partnership to deal with the growing number of Chinese electric cars and vans entering Europe. Both companies will work together to make two new small electric cars first, and later expand the partnership to include vans and other commercial vehicles. However, this partnership is a strategic move for both companies.
Through this deal, Renault will be able to boost its production numbers, use its factories more efficiently, and reduce overall manufacturing costs for both itself and Ford. For Ford, this partnership offers a quicker and cheaper route to bring new EVs to Europe and allows them to compete better with the fast-growing Chinese brands.
Ford and Renault have signed an agreement to co-develop these products. The two upcoming Ford-branded electric cars will use Renault’s Ampere (AmpR) platform. This is the same platform used for models like the Renault 5, Renault 4, Twingo, Scenic and Megane E-Tech. These new cars are mainly meant for the European market, where Ford’s market share has dropped sharply from 6.1% in 2019 to 3.3% in 2025.
The first of these two Ford electric cars is expected to arrive in showrooms by early 2028. Both models will be small, affordable and simple to build. Ford currently sells two electric models in Europe that were made with Volkswagen using the MEB platform. With the Renault collaboration, Ford will add two more EVs to its lineup. This is important because European markets are seeing strong competition from Chinese EV makers like BYD, Changan, Xpeng and others, who are offering low-cost electric cars at a rapid pace.
François Provost, CEO Renault Group said: "Renault Group is proud to announce a new strategic cooperation with Ford, an iconic car manufacturer. This partnership shows the strength of our partnership know-how and competitiveness in Europe. In the long term, combining our strengths with Ford will make us more innovative and more responsive in a fast-changing European automotive market."
Jim Farley, president and CEO, Ford Motor Company said: "The strategic partnership with Renault Group marks an important step for Ford and supports our strategy to build a highly efficient and fit-for-the future business in Europe. We will combine Renault Group's industrial scale and EV assets with Ford's iconic design and driving dynamics to create vehicles that are fun, capable, and distinctly Ford in spirit."
