New Delhi: Ford have announced a huge $5 billion investment in their American manufacturing facilities, which is likely to create or secure 4,500 jobs across the Louisville Assembly Plant and the BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan. Apart from the investment in US production, there was also announcement about new manufactuting strategy, what CEO Jim Farley called their “Model T moment”
Starting at their Louisville factory, which is dubbed as “Ford Universal EV Production System”, is likely to be a faster and much more efficient production line as the company keeps investing in electric vehicles.
Ford’s Chief Officer Kumar Galhotra said that the production line will be very different from their usual production system and will replace linear assembly line with three independent branches, the front, the rear and the structural battery. Galhotra explained that the battery being criticial component of the car, and all of the branches come together while integrating the interior, seats, carpet, console and the lot.
These branches are going to run parallel and come togeth in the end and will be 40 per cent quicker than the current pace said Galhotra, with the net impact standing at 15 per cent speed improvement.
The new production strategy starts with $30,000 electric pickup which the brand believes will debut in 2027. The truck will use “advanced” prismatic lithium iron phosphate batteries and would be as fast as the EcoBoost Mustange. The battery technology itself is going to be without cobalt and nickel which Ford claim will help in saving space, weight and cost. The new technology will also reportedly better the car’s centre of gravity, improving handling and making a roomier cabin.
Both Louisville Assembly Plant and the BlueOval Battery Park are going to see major changes in order to accomodate their prodution of electric pickup.
