New Delhi: It is almost impossible to imagine a time when the Mahindra Thar didn’t exist, originally coming in 2010. The Thar’s second generation was launched in October of 2025. In just five years now, they have crossed the landmark 3,00,000 sales milestone in September 2025. Further accelerating their growth has been the five-door Thar Roxx, which has been the more powerful seller of the variant.

The second generation’s three-door model gained a lot of popularity amongst people for its off-road ability while still retaining the city driving qualities, along with modern features and automatic options. The Thar Roxx suits perfectly for people looking for practicality in usage. It's not that it is without competition. It has both Jimny and Gurkha, but Thar can cover both their strengths within it.

What sets Mahindra apart from its competition?

For example, the Jimny comes as an accessible option, but it is a much compact car. It is brilliant to drive and own, but it still feels like a weekend car that you use for fun activities. The Gurkha is for 4/4 activities, but it just doesn’t have that city drive vibe.

Coming in September last year, it is the Thar Roxx that has actually made Thar a permanent fixture, redefining the brand’s face completely. In just a year, they have sold around 71,000 units and accounted for 68 per cent of Thar sales in the first five months of the FY2026.

The Thar makes for 15 per cent of Mahindra’s SUV volumes since 2020 and was the brand’s second best-selling model after the two Scorpio variants in April-August 2025. Coming with a Rs 1.35 lakh GST 2.0 price cut, the facelifted Thar is coming out soon as well. It comes with powerful engines, brilliant tough design and an option of having both RWD and 4WD, which has every flocking to the Mahindra dealership.

For the future, Mahindra have shown the Vision T and how it might look. Demographically, Thar has covered both the college-going student and the person who wants something practical yet outrageous.
