New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz India have brought back the diesel engine option of the G-Class off-roader after a year-long hiatus. At the start of this year, Mercedes expanded the G-Wagen’s portfolio with the all-electric G 580 with EQ Tech, which joins the top-spec AMG 63.
With the coming of Mercedes G 450d, launched at Rs 2.9 crore, the G-Class is available in petrol, diesel and EV powertrains. In the first batch, only 50 G-Class diesels have been brought to the country as of now. Coming at this price, it is Rs 20 lakh less than the all-electric G-550 with EQ tech. The G 450d’s closest rival would be the range topper, Land Rover Defender 110 diesel Trophy Edition, which costs Rs 1.3 crore, still Rs 1.6 crore less.
The G 450d is much more powerful than its predecessors in India, the G350d and G 400d. The G 450d comes with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that makes 367 bhp and 750 Nm of peak torque. The 48V mild-hybrid system adds around 20 bhp when required. The power goes to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
Mercedes have claimed that it has a 0-100kph time of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 210 kph. As an off-roader, the Mercedes G 450d sports gets a 241 mm of ground clearance between the axles and a maximum depth of 700 mm and approach, breakover and departure angles of 31 degrees, 26 degrees and 30 degrees respectively. Mercedes have further claimed that the G 450d will be able to remain stable on sideward slopes of close to 35 degrees.
The G 450d on the inside comes with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that runs with the latest MBUX NTG7 software to augment reality navigation function that assists with off-roading with the “transparent nonnet” feature.
Other than that, it gets Nappa leather upholstery, customisable ambient lighting, and even a 760W 18-speaker Burmester sound system with Dolby Atmos. It also gets the Level 2 ADAS suite, which includes active brake assist, lane-keeping assist and a 360-degree camera as standard.
Outside, the G 450d looks much like the G 450d that was on sale in 2024, but there are a few changes. The grille now comes with four horizontal slats finished in chrome, new 20-inch AMG alloy wheels and slightly altered front and rear bumpers. The G 450d stands alone almost in the segment, and the big value is for the name it carries, being one of the most popular SUVs still.
