New Delhi: Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday unveiled the Vision Iconic coupe concept with a bold Art Deco-inspired design, which previews the next-generation S-Class that is due to make its global debut in 2028. Autocar UK noted that the two-door concept gives a hint of the return of a coupe and convertible to the brand’s line-up in the future as well.
The Mercedes Vision Concept was unveiled at the brand’s design house in Shanghai, China and comes with the automaker’s most upgraded technologies. In what has been shown, it is loaded with features, and it is a look into what the future holds from Mercedes.
The biggest point of talking is the five-slatted version of Mercedes’ illuminated grille, which has been inspired by vintage models like the 1956 300Sc and is one of the most striking design features of the luxury coupe. The new grille design debuted with the GLC EV, but where the SUV has a lit-up three-pointed star in the centre, the coupe places it above the nose. The star motif also comes in the slim, pointed headlights.
Taking inspiration from Mercedes coupes from the 1930s, it gets a long bonnet and swept-back cabin. The sides come with huge seven-spoke, aero-optimised wheels, fenders with curved vents, and polished brass door handles.
Chrome is used sparingly along the sides, accenting the area under the doors as well as the framing of the window. It comes with a sloping rear roofline that takes hints from the 1954 300 SL, rounded off with slim LED tail-lights, a Mercedes logo that isn’t illuminated, along with a thin chrome strip under the plain bumper.
The Vision Iconic’s interior is designed to give it a more lounge-like feel than the traditional car cabin. The dashboard’s centrepiece is a floating glass structure called the Zeppelin, which mixes analogue elements with digital displays. The front bench seat, upholstered in deep blue velvet, allows both occupants to sit in comfort. It also gets an old-school four-spoke steering wheel with Mercedes logo at the centre and a floor that is covered with straw marquetry.
Mercedes have equipped the concept with Level 2 ADAS features that can handle urban driving, assisting with steering, and acceleration in traffic. The brand says that the car is being made to eventually support Level 4 ADAS, where the driver has little or no functions to perform apart from seating. In fact, after reaching the destination, it can park autonomously without any human input.
The concept also makes use of steer-by-wire tech, where there is no mechanical link between the steering wheel and front wheels. This configuration makes for quicker and more precise control and easier manoeuvring, which frees space inside the cabin. Together with the rear-axle steering, it will make the car more agile and much easier to park in a tight spot despite being such a big car.
